مَرِضناwe fell ill فَماbut no عادَناvisited us عائِدُa visitor
وَلاnor قيلَit was said أَينَwhere الفَتىthe young man الأَلمَعيthe brilliant one
We fell ill, but no visitor came to see us.
We fell ill, so we did not return
Nor was it asked, "Where is the brilliant young man?"
Nor was it said, where is the brilliant youth?
وَلاnor حَنَّyearned طِرسٌa page إِلىfor كاتِبٍa writer
وَلاnor خَفَّfell lightly لَفظٌa word عَلىupon مِسمَعِan ear
Nor did a page yearn for a writer.
Nor did a messenger long for a writer
Nor did a word fall lightly upon an ear.
Nor did a word softly fall on a hearing
سَكَتناwe fell silent فَعَزَّso became hard عَلَيناfor us السُكوتُsilence
وَهانَand became easy الكَلامُspeech عَلىfor المُدَّعيthe pretender
We fell silent, and silence was hard for us.
We were silent, so silence became hard for us
And speech came easily to the pretender.
And speech became cheap for the claimant
فَياso, O دَولَةًa reign آذَنَتhas given notice بِالزَوالِof decline
رَجَعناwe have returned لِعَهدِto the days of الهَوىlove فَاِرجِعيso return
So, O reign that has heralded its decline,
So O state that signals decline
We have returned to the days of love; so return.
We returned to the era of love, so return
وَلاand do not تَحسَبيناthink us سَلَوناwe have forgotten النَسيبَlove verse
وَبَينَand between الضُلوعِthe ribs فُؤادٌa heart يَعيunderstands
And do not think we have forgotten love verse,
And do not think we forgot the beloved
While between the ribs is a heart that understands.
While within the ribs lies a heart that knows
