They scattered dewy flowers upon you,

And I came to scatter my verses among them.

O adornment of youth and adornment of seekers of the heights,

Are you aware of the sorrowing hearts?

You left us, with calamities lying in wait,

And life was a life of humiliation and captivity.

How sorely we needed you whenever we were attacked

By an aggressor, and the criers shouted, 'Make haste!'

Where is the orator, and where the enchanter of minds?

Long have ears and eyes been waiting.

By God, why do you not answer a caller?

What has befallen you, O Abu al-Mighwar?

Rise and erase what Cromer's right hand wrote

In ignorance of the faith of the One, the All-Subduer.

You would grow angry for al-Kinana whenever

She and her hope were about to stumble,

With a devout man's anger for his Lord and His Book,

Or al-Faruq's anger for the Chosen One.

Your body proved too narrow for your reach, and could not

Bear you patiently, while you were a flame of fire.

That struggle destroyed it, and it was crushed by

A resolve that crushes the gravest dangers.

Your right hand played with the reed pen, surpassing

The horsemen's play with swaying spears.

And you raced toward the heights, seeking their farthest reach,

Then fate ran its course while you were on the racecourse.

Is it that whenever hope brandishes an Indian-forged sword,

The deadly calamities of fate rush upon it?

Rest eluded me on the night his death was announced,

And I witnessed his procession, and my peace returned.

And the bearers of his death's news raced—one flew

By electricity, and another flew by steam.

I witnessed the Day of Gathering on the day of his death,

And from it I learned the degrees of worth.

And I saw how nations accord their men

The loyalty due to them and the reverence they are owed.

Ninety thousand, bowed in reverence around your bier,

    Walk beneath your advancing banner.

They wrote with their tears upon the face of the earth

    Line upon line of sorrow.

At times they keep up their clamor, as though they were

A caravan of pilgrims at the visitors' Kaaba.

And at times, such is their reverence, you would think them

At the prayer ground, listening silently to a reciter.

Reverence overcame them, so their tears

    Flow without grimaces or nose-blowing.

You were beneath their tears and their sighs,

Between a rushing torrent and sparks.

I hasten forward; the blaze seizes me, and I turn back,

Then the surging current bars my way.

Had I not sought refuge by the bier or in its shade,

I would have perished between cauldrons and seas.

How many a secluded woman, the day death circled you,

Tore open for you the silken curtains!

She unveiled herself to bid farewell to a nation carried

On the bier, not merely an item of news.

She felt safe from the onlookers' eyes, so she tore

The front of her veil, and sought no refuge in a veil.

There had already risen between the eyes and her

A screen of sorrows and distress.

You were wrapped in the flag to which you gave

Your sincere love, and it became the finest garment.

Two standards above the heads, each of them

With a secret among secrets in its folds.

The herald of parting called them, and they came to be

Embracing each other upon a crumbling brink.

By God, no lover has grieved or wept

For a dreadful parting and a distant place of meeting,

As the Crescent grieved for you the day you left it

Between the heat of sorrow and the heat of a blaze,

    Looking about, bewildered, seeking out

A man to fight for it on a day of glory.

Indeed, the thirty years that took pride in you

Have come to be measured against the longest lifetimes.

They added to history a few pages,

White as the pages of the righteous.

I likened them to a fragrant drop

Holding the essence of a richly fragrant garden.

You left them like a copybook model, whose pattern is followed

By one hoping to arrive and one following the tracks.

What harm could befall the night traveler, while they lie scattered,

If he travels through unknown lands and wastelands?

You kept choosing rugged places to stand,

Until you stood against that tyrant.

And you demolished a wall whose construction had been perfected

By Pharaoh, lord of stakes and rivers.

And you linked our complaint to elders

    In Parliament, honored and upright.

They lifted the veil from their eyes, and saw

What harm and injury lay in al-Kinana.

They rejected the lord's words when they discerned

The enraged man's fury and the chatterer's tone.

And he hurled two volumes at them; they cast both

Into the rank of zeros, not books.

Ah, for those stands! Indeed, they

Were the stands of a fierce lion of the forest.

Threats did not turn him from them, nor was bent

His resolve by the doubter's warning, 'Beware!'

So rejoice in your new home, and sleep there

In bliss, and enjoy the best of neighbors.

And receive the great reward in recompense for what

You sacrificed of your desires for your homelands.

Excellent is the recompense, and excellent what you were granted

In both your homes; excellent is the final abode.
