The darkness has faded; when will you sleep?

Is it worry that drove away your sleep, or lovesickness?

The sorrowful and the complaining have dozed, and so has

The afflicted; the love-stricken has slept.

Yet you wring both hands at one moment,

And at other times, sickness tosses you about.

Your tears have streamed down until

The clouds learned from your eyes.

The mattresses cried out at your tossing,

And the darkness pitied your anguished yearning.

You spend the night vying with the heavens in wakefulness,

While sleep has dimmed the universe's eye.

You conceal from us the story of your love, until

    Silence reveals what speech concealed.

By your Lord, have you returned to a lingering trace

Of memory, and has passion returned?

And gray hair has flashed—and that is a sword

That death has hung upon your temples.

Does it befit the man of letters, Egypt's man of letters,

To weep like a child distressed by weaning?

And should love distract him from remembering Egypt,

While Egypt is oppressed in the tyrant's grasp?

May I lose my pen if what afflicts me

Is love with a fire burning between my ribs.

What have I to do with passion, when my head has grayed,

And grievous calamity has ravaged my youth?

And that which schooled Labid has schooled me,

Then taught me what humankind did not know.

By your life, I have lain awake for none but Egypt,

And apart from her I have no hope to pursue.

I recalled her majesty in the days when

The mighty Pharaohs wielded power through her.

And the days when her men were truly men,

And the days when Time was her servant.

So what has lodged within her has disturbed my rest,

And what Egypt herself is lodged in—am I to blame?

I see a people in the path of calamities,

Whose bones an incurable disease has drained of marrow.

Whenever a year of hardship passes,

Another year of hardship looms over them.

The disease of idle dependence has spread through them, until

That throng snatched away their livelihood.

It has defied the wise among us,

    As leprosy has defied medicine.

An individual's ruin springs from negligence,

And a people's death springs from division.

And we have indeed grown slack and divided,

So there is neither effort nor harmony.

Thus our dwelling in the land of Egypt has turned bitter,

While dwelling there has grown pleasant for others.

So it is no wonder if others gain control over

Our paths, while most of us sleep.

Husayn, Husayn, you are equal to this task; awaken

Men who have slept instead of seeking justice.

And, by your father, be a support to your brother's son,

For you are a fine blade in his hand.

Pour harmony into the council chamber,

For discord has ruined both us and it.

And teach them to confront calamities,

For one like you is not daunted by the clash.

For in the party of the Right you have men,

And though they are few, they are noble.

And in the party of the Left you have lions,

Brave warriors who have no taste for defeat.

So stand for the country, and do not fail

To seize favorable moments and opportunities.

They did not gain mastery over us by a miracle,

But there is unity in their ranks.

So never trust those people's promise,

For their politicians' clouds hold no rain.

And fear them when they turn gentle, for I

See that politicians honor no pledge.

How often the chief has laughed at our beards,

And a smile of his has deceived our leading men.

Abu al-Fallah, affairs are in chaos,

And the people's ignorance and chaos are inseparable.

So bring us happiness by spreading knowledge, and know

That imperfection is followed by perfection.

    Knowledge alone cannot sustain us,

Unless resolve lends knowledge its support.

And if the constitution does not come to Egypt's aid,

Her life will never have a firm foundation.

They barred us from drinking the Nile's sweet water,

And said it was a swift death.

Yet that swift death, if we use our reason,

Is nothing but the companies, for which the forbidden has become lawful.

They have indeed prospered through our heedlessness, and departed

With our wealth, the tramway foremost among them.

Alas for the Canal if it is taken over by

The sons of the Thames, and the veil falls away!

It has remained a mere scrap of worldly wealth

In our hands, and even scraps have grown scarce.

And we had made it a rein,

Oh, my anguish if that rein is cut!

    O Qasr al-Dubara, I do not know:

Is war in your pouch, or peace?

Answer us: are we meant to go backward,

And perish, or are we meant to go forward?

And O party of the Right, keep away from us!

Your arrows and shafts have indeed missed their mark.

And O party of the Left, to you from us,

And from the sons of your valor, peace.
