ياO رافِعاًraiser of رايَةَthe banner of الشورىconsultation وَحارِسَهاand its guardian
يا رافِعاً رايَةَ الشورى وَحارِسَها
جَزاكَmay He reward you رَبُّكَyour Lord خَيراًwith good عَنon behalf of مُحِبّيهاthose who love it
جَزاكَ رَبُّكَ خَيراً عَن مُحِبّيها
O raiser of the banner of consultation and its guardian,
O bearer of the banner of consultation and its guardian
May your Lord reward you with good on behalf of those who love it.
May your Lord reward you well for those who love it
لَمdid not يُلهِكَdistract you النَزعُthe throes of death عَنfrom تَأييدِupholding دَولَتِهاits rule
لَم يُلهِكَ النَزعُ عَن تَأييدِ دَولَتِها
وَلِلمَنِيَّةِand death has آلامٌagonies تُعانيهاyou endure them
وَلِلمَنِيَّةِ آلامٌ تُعانيها
The throes of death did not distract you from upholding its rule,
Dissension did not make you abandon supporting its state
And death has agonies that you endure.
And death has pains that afflict it
لَمdid not أَنسَI forget أَمرَكَyour command لِلمِقدادِto al-Miqdad يَحمِلُهُhe carries it
لَم أَنسَ أَمرَكَ لِلمِقدادِ يَحمِلُهُ
إِلىto الجَماعَةِthe assembly إِنذاراًa warning وَتَنبيهاand an admonition
إِلى الجَماعَةِ إِنذاراً وَتَنبيها
I have not forgotten your command to al-Miqdad, which he carried
I have not forgotten your order to Al-Miqdad to convey it
To the assembly as a warning and an admonition:
To the community - a warning and notification
إِنif ظَلَّremains بَعدَafter ثَلاثٍthree رَأيُهاits opinion شُعَباًsplit into branches
إِن ظَلَّ بَعدَ ثَلاثٍ رَأيُها شُعَباً
فَجَرِّدِthen unsheathe السَيفَthe sword وَاِضرِبand strike فيat هَواديهاtheir necks
فَجَرِّدِ السَيفَ وَاِضرِب في هَواديها
If, after three, their opinion remains split into branches,
That if after three days its opinion remains diverse
Then unsheathe the sword and strike at their necks.
Then unsheathe the sword and strike at its valleys
فَاِعجَبso marvel لِقُوَّةِat the strength of نَفسٍa soul لَيسَdoes not يَصرِفُهاturn it aside
فَاِعجَب لِقُوَّةِ نَفسٍ لَيسَ يَصرِفُها
طَعمُthe taste of المَنِيَّةِdeath مُرّاًbitter عَنfrom مَراميهاits aims
طَعمُ المَنِيَّةِ مُرّاً عَن مَراميها
Marvel, then, at the strength of a soul not turned aside
So I wonder at the strength of a soul that does not divert it
By death's bitter taste from its aims.
The bitterness of death from its goals
دَرىknew عَميدُthe chief of بَنيthe sons of الشورىconsultation بِمَوضِعِهاof its place
دَرى عَميدُ بَني الشورى بِمَوضِعِها
فَعاشَso he lived ماas long as عاشَhe lived يَبنيهاhe builds it وَيُعليهاand raises it high
فَعاشَ ما عاشَ يَبنيها وَيُعليها
The chief of consultation's sons knew its place,
The chief of the people of consultation knew its place
So, all his life, he built it up and raised it high.
So he lived as long as he built it and elevated it
وَماand did not اِستَبَدَّact autocratically بِرَأيٍby an opinion فيin حُكومَتِهِhis government
وَما اِستَبَدَّ بِرَأيٍ في حُكومَتِهِ
إِنَّindeed الحُكومَةَgovernment تُغريtempts مُستَبِدّيهاits despots
إِنَّ الحُكومَةَ تُغري مُستَبِدّيها
And he never imposed his own opinion in his government;
And he did not impose an opinion in his rule
For government tempts its despots.
Indeed absolute rule corrupts its wielders
رَأيُthe opinion of الجَماعَةِthe assembly لاdoes not تَشقىsuffer البِلادُthe land بِهِthrough it
رَأيُ الجَماعَةِ لا تَشقى البِلادُ بِهِ
رَغمَdespite الخِلافِdisagreement وَرَأيُand the opinion of الفَردِthe individual يُسقيهاwaters it
رَغمَ الخِلافِ وَرَأيُ الفَردِ يُسقيها
The land does not suffer under the assembly's opinion,
The opinion of the community does not cause misery
Despite disagreement; and an individual's opinion waters it.
Despite differences - while individuals' opinions ruin it
