O night that inspired me with what lets me boast

Over the guardians of rhyme, wherever they boast.

Indeed, I see a marvel that inspires wonder:

Time concealed it, and the festival revealed it.

Is that what the Merciful promised His chosen ones—

    Gardens, houris, youths, and waters?

Or has the garden, clad in brocade, been adorned

In a scene the eye seeks to behold again?

I see the lamps within it, shining,

As though they were blossoms greeted by the autumn rain.

Or are they merely embroidered words,

With each word's meaning shining forth within it?

I see the people's hearts hovering above them,

Like birds that glimpse a watering place and come to it.

I see the sons of Egypt hastening beneath the night

Toward good fortune, whose countenance beams in that night.

I see adornments on earth that have made me forget

The sky's adornments, and a beauty I shall not forget.

I see Abbas's throne, surrounded by

    God's protection, prosperity, and prestige.

I see His Highness our Khedive; outstretched

In justice and generosity are his right hand and his left.

Say to those who have established a prize for poetry:

Why the dispute? Has God not guided you?

    إِن لَم تُحَلّوهُ فَالرَحمَنُ حَلّاهُ

    Indeed, I have opened for it a breast worthy of it;

If you do not adorn it, the Merciful has adorned it.

I feared no one outstripping me in poetry,

Save a youth whose only rival for the lead is himself.

That is the one whose reed pen judged among us,

And God and Abbas have honored his abode.
