مَرَّتit passed كَعُمرِlike the lifetime of الوَردِthe rose بَيناwhile أَجتَليI behold
اِصباحَهاits dawn إِذwhen آذَنَتit gave notice بِرَواحِof departure
It passed, brief as a rose's life; while I beheld
The rose's life did pass by while I sat reveling,
its dawn, it suddenly announced its departure.
when its morn proclaimed its soul's leave-taking.
لَمdid not أَقضِI fulfill مِنof حَقِّthe due of المُدامِthe wine وَلَمand did not أَقُمI perform
فيamong الشارِبينَthe drinkers بِواجِبِwith the duty of الأَقداحِthe goblets
I had not paid wine its due, nor fulfilled
Neither did I fulfill the wine-bearer's due right,
among the drinkers the duty owed to the goblets.
nor in drinking did I rise to meet the challenge of the cups.
وَالزَهرُand the flowers يَحتَثُّurge on الكُؤوسَthe goblets بِلَحظِهِwith their gaze
وَيَشوبُهاand mixes them بِأَريجِهِwith their fragrance الفَيّاحِfar-spreading
And the flowers urge on the goblets with their gaze,
The blossoms hasten on the goblets with a glance,
and mingle their far-spreading fragrance into them.
and scent them with their fragrant exhalation.
أَخشىI fear عَواقِبَهاits consequences وَأَغبِطُand I envy شَربَهاits drinkers
وَأُجيدُand I excel at مِدحَتَهاpraising it مَعَwith المُدّاحِthe praisers
I fear its consequences and envy its drinkers,
I fear its consequence, yet envy its drinking,
and excel at praising it alongside its praisers.
and excellently praise it along with the eulogizer.
وَأَميلُand I sway مِنfrom طَرَبٍdelight إِذاwhen مالَتit swayed بِهِمwith them
فَاِعجَبso marvel لِنَشوانِat one intoxicated الجَوانِحِthe breast صاحيsober
And I sway with delight when it makes them sway;
I incline from rapture whenever it tilts with them—
so marvel at one drunk at heart, yet sober!
so strange is the ecstasy of impassioned breasts!
أَستَغفِرُI seek forgiveness from اللَهَGod العَظيمَthe Great فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
أَفسَدتُI ruined فيon ذاكَthat النَهارِday صَلاحيmy virtue
I seek forgiveness from God the Great, for indeed I
I ask Allah, the Almighty, to forgive me,
ruined my virtue on that day.
for I did corrupt my rectitude that day.
