كَأَنّيas though I أَرىsee فيin اللَيلِthe night نَصلاًa blade مُجَرَّداunsheathed
يَطيرُfly بِكِلتاalong both صَفحَتَيهِits faces شَرارُsparks
It is as though I see an unsheathed blade in the night,
As if I see a bare blade flying
Sparks fly along both its faces.
With sparks bursting from its sharp edges
تُقَلِّبُهُturns it لِلعَينِbefore the eye كَفٌّa hand خَفِيَّةٌunseen
فَفيهِso in it خُفوقٌquivering تارَةًat times وَقَرارُand stillness
An unseen hand turns it before the eye;
A stealthy hand turns it before my eyes
So it quivers at one moment and is still at another.
Now pulsing, now still
يُماثِلُresembles نَصليmy blade فيin صَفاءِthe clarity of فِرِندِهِits damask pattern
وَيَحكيهِand mirrors it مِنهُfrom it رَونَقٌa sheen وَغِرارُand a cutting edge
It resembles my blade in the clarity of its damask pattern,
It matches my blade in the sheen of its blade
And its sheen and cutting edge mirror mine.
With elegance and pride does it portray it
أَراهُI see it فَتُدنينيso draws me near إِلَيهِto it شَراسَتيmy ferocity
فَيَنأىthen it recedes وَفيand within نَفسيmy soul إِلَيهِtoward it أُوارُburning ardor
I see it, and my ferocity draws me toward it,
I see it, so my ferocity draws me to it
Yet it recedes, while my soul burns with longing for it.
But it recoils, while in myself desire for it smolders
وَأَهويand I sweep down بِزَنديwith my forearm طامِعاًhoping فيfor اِلتِقاطِهِgrasping it
فَيُدرِكُهُthen overtakes it عِندَupon الدُنُوِّdrawing near نِفارُan urge to flee
And I sweep down with my forearm, hoping to grasp it,
I lunge with my spear, hoping to seize it
Then, at my approach, an urge to flee overtakes it.
But at my approach it takes flight
تَخَبَّطَنيhas deranged me مَسٌّa possessing touch مِنَfrom الجِنِّthe jinn أَمor سَرَتhave coursed
بِأَجزاءِthrough the parts of نَفسيmy soul نَشوَةٌintoxication وَخُمارُand a hangover
Has a touch of the jinn deranged me, or have there coursed
Am I seized by a jinn's touch or has delight
Through the parts of my soul intoxication and a hangover?
And intoxication overtaken my soul?
أَرانِيَI see myself فيin لَيلٍa night مِنَof الشَكِّdoubt مُظلِمٍdark
فَيالَيتَso, would that شِعريmy knowing هَلwhether يَليهِfollows it نَهارُdaylight
I see myself in a dark night of doubt;
I see myself in a night of murky doubt
So, would that I knew: will daylight follow it?
Would that I knew will daylight follow it?
سَأَقتُلُI shall kill ضَيفيmy guest وَاِبنَand the son of عَمّيmy paternal uncle وَمالِكيand my lord
وَلَوand even if أَنَّthat عُقبىthe final lot of القاتِلينَthe killers خَسارُruin
I shall kill my guest—my cousin and my lord—
I will kill my guest, cousin and master
Even if the murderers' end is ruin.
Though for killers the aftermath is loss
وَأُرضيand I satisfy هَوىthe desire of نَفسيmy soul وَإِنand even if صَحَّis true قَولُهُمtheir saying
هَوىthe desire of النَفسِthe soul ذُلٌّabasement وَالخِيانَةُand treachery عارُdisgrace
And satisfy my soul's desire, even if their saying is true:
I will sate my soul's desire though they say
The soul's desire is abasement, and treachery is disgrace.
Desire of the soul is base and treachery disgrace
فَياso, O أَيُّهاyou (vocative) النَصلُthe blade الَّذيthat لاحَgleamed فيin الدُجىthe darkness
وَفيand in طَيِّthe recesses of نَفسيmy soul لِلشُرورِfor evils مَثارُa wellspring
So, O blade that gleamed in the darkness,
O blade that flashed in the gloom
While in my soul's recesses lies a wellspring of evil,
And stirred the demons within my soul
تُرىI wonder خَدَعَتنيdeceived me العَينُthe eye أَمor كُنتُI was مُبصِراًseeing clearly
وَهَذاand this دَمٌblood أَمor فيat شَباتِكَyour sharp point نارُfire
I wonder: did my eye deceive me, or did I truly see?
Did my eyes deceive me or was I seeing true
And is this blood, or is there fire at your point?
Is that blood or flames in your sheen?
وَهَلand (question marker) أَنتَyou تِمثالٌan embodiment لِكَيدٍof a plot نَوَيتُهُI intended it
وَذاكَand that الدَمُblood الجاريflowing عَلَيكَover you شِعارُan emblem
And are you an embodiment of a plot I intended,
Are you a specter of evil I intended
And is that blood flowing over you an emblem?
With that blood spilt on you a sign?
فَإِنso if لَمnot تَكُنyou are وَهماًan illusion فَكُنthen be خَيرَthe best مُسعِدٍhelper
فَإِنّيfor I am وَحيدٌalone وَالخُطوبُand calamities كُثارُmany
So if you are not an illusion, be the best helper,
If you are not a delusion, be a blessed guide
For I am alone, and calamities are many.
For I am alone and sorrows abound
وَكُنand be ليfor me دَليلاًa guide فيin الظَلامِthe darkness وَهادِياًand a leader
فَلَيليfor my night بَهيمٌpitch-dark وَالطَريقُand the road عِثارُstumbling
And be my guide in the darkness, and lead me,
Be my guide in the dark and my leader
For my night is pitch-dark, and the road fraught with stumbling.
For my night is bestial and the road strewn
عَلىupon الفَتكِtreacherous killing ياO دُنكانُDuncan صَحَّتhas become firm عَزيمَتيmy resolve
وَإِنand even though لَمnot يَكُنthere is بَينيbetween me وَبَينَكَand between you ثارُa blood-feud
My resolve to murder is firm, O Duncan,
I am resolved upon murder, O thin sword
And though no blood-feud lies between me and you.
Though no vengeance lies between you and me
فَإِنfor if يَكُbe حُبُّlove of التاجِthe crown أَعمىhas blinded بَصيرَتيmy insight
فَماthen not ليfor me عَلىregarding هَذاthis القَضاءِdecree of fate خِيارُa choice
For if love of the crown has blinded my insight,
If love of power has blinded my sight
Then I have no choice against this decree of fate.
I have no choice but to accept this fate
أَعِرنيlend me فُؤاداًa heart مِنكَfrom you ياO دَهرُTime قاسِياًhard
لَوif only أَنَّthat القُلوبَhearts القاسِياتِhard تُعارُcould be lent
Lend me a hard heart of yours, O Time—
Give me, O pitiless fate, a heart steadfast as yours
If only hard hearts could be lent!
If only hard hearts could be borrowed!
وَياand O حِلمُforbearance قاطِعنيforsake me وَياand O رُشدُgood sense لاdo not تَثُبreturn
وَياand O شَرُّevil ماno ليfor me مِنfrom يَدَيكَyour two hands فِرارُescape
And O forbearance, forsake me; and O good sense, do not return;
O severed patience, O fleeing reason, do not slip away
And O evil, I have no escape from your hands.
Evil, I have no escape from your hands
وَياand O لَيلُnight أَنزِلنيlodge me بِجَوفِكَin your depths مَنزِلاًa dwelling
يَضِلُّloses its way بِهِin it سِربُa flock of القَطاsandgrouse وَيَحارُand is bewildered
And O night, give me a dwelling in your depths
O night, deposit me in your depths
Where a flock of sandgrouse loses its way and is bewildered.
Where the wild cats stray and lose their way
وَإِنand if كُنتَyou are لَيلَthe night of المانَوِيَّةِthe Manichaeans فَليَكُنthen let there be
عَلىover سِرِّthe secret of أَهلِthe people of الشَرِّevil مِنكَfrom you سِتارُa veil
And if you are the Manichaeans' night, then let there be
And if you are the night of eluding foes
A veil from you over the secret of the evildoers.
Then hide the secrets of the evil folk
وَياand O قَدَميmy foot سيريmove حِذاراًcautiously وَخافِتيand soften
مِنَin المَشيِwalking لَوif يُنجيcould save الأَثيمَthe sinner حِذارُcaution
And O my foot, move warily, and soften
O my feet, tread warily, softly
Your tread—if caution could save the sinner.
If wariness could save the villain from his fate
وَقَفتُI stood بِجَوفِin the depths of اللَيلِthe night وَقفَةَwith the stance of ساحِرٍa sorcerer
لَهُfor him الجِنُّthe jinn أَهلٌfamily وَالمَكايِدُand plots دارُa home
I stood in the depths of night with a sorcerer's stance,
I stood in the belly of night with the stance of a sorcerer
The jinn are his family, and plots his home.
To whom jinn are kith and treachery kin
إِذاwhen اِشتَمَلَenfolds اللَيلُthe night البَهيمُpitch-dark عَلىaround الوَرىhumankind
تَجَرَّدَhe devotes himself لِلإيذاءِto harming حَيثُwherever يُثارُhe is roused
When the pitch-dark night enfolds humankind,
When the bestial night wraps the world in its shroud
He devotes himself to harm wherever he is roused.
It bares its fangs, ready to bite
فَماليso what ails me كَأَنّيas though I فاتِكٌa treacherous killer ذوhaving عَشيرَةٍa clan
خِيارُهُمُtheir best تَحتَbeneath الظَلامِthe darkness شِرارُvillains
So what ails me, as though I were a killer with a clan
Why am I like a noble killer, of honored stock
Whose best are villains beneath the darkness?
Yet their best in the dark are most vile
إِذاwhen ما(emphasis) عَوىhowls ذِئبُthe wolf of الفَلاthe wastes هَبَّsprings up جَمعُهُمtheir band
إِلىto الشَرِّevil وَاِستُلَّتand are unsheathed ظُباًsword-blades وَشِفارُand knife-blades
When the wolf of the wastes howls, their band springs up
When the wolves of desolation howl, their pack
To evil, and sword-blades and knife-blades are unsheathed.
Rushes to evil, baring claw and fang
