بَطيءَslow سُرىًnight travel إِلىtoward اللُبثِlingering مَيلَهُits inclination
I spend it in longing, save for a small part,
I spend it yearning, though yearning little suits me,
Slow in its nightly passage, inclined to linger.
Slowly tending towards lingering, such is its bent.
وَلَيسَand is not اِشتِياقيmy yearning عَنfrom غَرامٍpassion بِشادِنٍfor a young gazelle
وَلَكِنَّهُbut it is شَوقُthe longing اِمرِئٍof a man فاتَleft behind أَهلَهُhis family
And my yearning is not born of passion for a young gazelle,
Yet my yearning comes not from a transport of passion,
But is the longing of a man who has left his family behind.
But a yearning for one gone from home and kin.
فَيالَكَso, what a ... you are! مِنof لَيلٍa night أَعَرتُI lent نُجومَهُits stars
تَوَقُّدَthe burning أَنفاسيmy breaths وَعانَيتُand I suffered مِثلَهُlike it
So, what a night! I lent its stars
O what a night whose stars I exposed!
The burning of my breaths, and suffered as it did.
My breath kindled and I suffered its like.
وَمَلَّand grew weary كِلاناboth of us مِنof أَخيهِhis brother وَهَكَذاand thus
إِذاwhen طالَgrew long عَهدُthe familiarity المَرءِof a man بِالشَيءِwith the thing مَلَّهُhe tired of it
And each of us grew weary of his brother; and so it is:
Both of us were wearied of each other, and thus,
When a man's familiarity with a thing is prolonged, he tires of it.
When a man is long parted from a thing, it wearies him.
