أَنا في الجيزَةِ ثاوٍ

أَنا في الجيزَةِ ثاوٍ

لَيسَ لي فيها أَنيسُ

I dwell in Giza.

I wander alone in Giza,

I have no companion there.

I have no companion here,

أَنكَرَ الأُنسُ مَكاني

وَنَأى عَنّي الجَليسُ

وَنَأى عَنّي الجَليسُ

Companionship has disowned my dwelling,

Familiarity shuns my place,

And the companion has withdrawn from me.

Friends avoid me,

لَيسَ يَدري مَن رَآني

أَطَليقَ أَم حَبيسُ

أَطَليقَ أَم حَبيسُ

Whoever has seen me cannot tell

None who sees me knows

Whether I am free or captive.
