I came to the market of Ukaz,

    Hastening at the president's command,

    Offering him rhymed verses

    With bowed heads.

    They have no fair appearance

In which to glory on the written pages,

    Nor any beauty

That flows with them through souls.

Shawqi's bounty did not grant them

    A remnant of life's breath.

So they are a barren waste, empty

    Of every precious meaning.

And they are a poor man's best effort,

A companion of care and misery.

    The president spoke—and who

    Can speak after the president?

He gave those present a drink

That makes one forget the priests' wine,

    Aged since before 'Ad,

In the dark recesses of prisons.

    The monasteries kindle from it

A fire like the Magians' fire.

It shows you, while the night is dark,

    Its suns in the cups.

    The daughters of Shawqi's thoughts

Are on display like a bride,

    أَتى بِمَعنىً شَموسِ

    Glorying in a noble meaning;

He has brought forth a meaning hard to tame.

    And a night at Ukaz

Gathered the champions of battle's furnace.

He revived in it the memory of an age

Whose traces lie on written pages:

An age in which poetry soared

To the shining realms of the suns,

    And its waters were clearer

    Than the ocean's waters.

So I came to it with a tale

Which I recount to those seated:

    I had visited Egypt's museum

    At noon on Thursday,

    With a group of companions,

Radiant of character, proud and fierce.

Then I was sorely distressed by a matter

    Grievous to souls,

And I was nearly felled by grief

    At her fortune turned awry.

And to be felled by grief is worse

Than to be felled by aged wine.

I saw the corpse of Khufu

    Near Sesostris.

So I said: O people, this

Is the work of vile, unfilial ingratitude.

    The bodies of Egypt's kings

And of the builders of Memphis,

    After fifty centuries,

Have found no rest in the graves.

    I see Egypt's pharaohs

    In humiliation and ill fortune,

    Displayed to humankind—

    Their bodies, for coins.

For a time we dug in search of them

In the dark recesses of oblivion.

So their sanctuary was unjustly trampled,

    And it had been untrodden.

    Perhaps they had fortified them

Against the destructive strokes of axes,

Knowing that it would be afflicted

By a grim day of evil.

    Had the likes of Menes

    Been in the West—or Ramses—

They would have built over them and marked out

    Enclosures of veneration.
