Her fragrance passed by me and stirred passionate love.

And called to me, so I paid her a fleeting visit.

A paradise that quickens life and polishes away

the soul's rust through splendor and order.

I visited her late at night, bearing within my soul

a lover's abasement and the brokenness of orphans.

And I wandered through her green thickets,

    rightward, leftward, and ahead.

Then behold, two gardens in that garden,

    swaying beneath a lavender-scented breeze.

They came walking gracefully, while the star was lost in reverie,

and the flowers' eyes sought sleep.

They passed where I stood, and a breeze arose

that kindled sorrow within me and stirred ardent passion.

So I traced the trail of their footsteps

and went quietly as I walked, out of modesty.

And I listened closely, hoping to quench my longing

and slake the burning thirst within my heart.

Then two accents, among the accents of

the East, captivated my heart, and it became lovestruck.

    تِلكَ مِصرِيَّةٌ تَسيلُ اِنسِجاما

    One was Syrian, overflowing with eloquence;

    one Egyptian, flowing with harmony.

    Discernment beside tenderness beside wit,

beside judgment you would take for inspiration.

They turned toward a great tree spreading its branches

and chose a resting place beside it.

Then Egypt's daughter cast off her veil,

and Syria's daughter drew aside her face veil.

So I imagined that the full moon had split,

though I had always rejected such fancies.

So I hid, then held my breath

as best I could, and clothed myself in darkness.

    They thought that place deserted,

with no watcher to fear and no talebearer.

So the conversation that unfolded there

was coolness and peace upon the heart.

When Egypt's daughter said to her sister:

“You are a people who have refused to be wronged.

True was the poet who said of you

words that awakened the sleepers among us:

They sailed the sea, crossed the pole, passed beyond

the station of the two luminaries, and plunged into darkness.

They ride adversities in pursuit of a livelihood

and whittle arrows for the struggle.”

Then Syria's gazelle stepped forward and said:

“Less of this, for you have exalted Syria.

    قَد بَلَغتُم مِن كُلِّ شَيءٍ مَراما

    You are the foremost in every pursuit;

you have reached an aim in everything.

Syria and Kinanah are but twins,

    living inseparably despite adversities.

Your mother is our mother, and she has suckled us

on her love, and we refuse to be weaned.

We settled beside you and praised

    your affection, generosity, and protection.

We settled in your land and found

a fertile dwelling and gracious hosts.

We visited your homes wherever we wished

and met with cheerfulness and smiles.

We drank from your Nile and forgot

Lebanon's sweet-flowing water and the clouds.

We drew light from your light and wrote,

excelling in our prose and verse.

We recited the verses of Shawqi and Sabri

    and saw what dazzles understanding.

They filled the East with wisdom and dwelt

in the recesses of souls, wherever they resided.

They sang to the two Easts what left the celestial spheres

bewildered and astonished the heavenly bodies.

They restored al-Rashid's age for Abbas,

becoming his reed pen and his sword.”

Then Egypt's maiden gestured and said:

“Enough! You have left Egypt nothing to say.

You are the people of ability and vigor,

of striving for the heights and determination.

Your land has brought forth on every horizon

    stars after stars, shooting afar,

that ride through terror without flinching, and walk

over the heads of hardships without holding back.

We have heard your Khalil, and heard

a poet who made intellect sit down and rise.

We aspired to his reach, but sat down helpless,

and broke our pens in our inability.

Syria, Iraq, and Egypt were strung together

by the thread of his verses; he became their leader.

Prose walked submissively, and poetry walked

and handed its reins to Khalil.

The lord of the Nile held our view of him

and bestowed that medal upon him:

an insignia that adorned poetry and became

a badge of victory adorning the banners.

So we gave him the banner of command over us

and celebrated, honoring him still more.”

Such was the delectable conversation that passed,

rousing the mind and moving boon companions.

I gleaned it bit by bit, and in this opposed

those who deem reporting a disgrace and a crime.

    For some reporting is lawful,

    and some reporting is forbidden.

The two maidens spoke truly; would that our two peoples

were as they described, in love and concord!

    We need everything that strengthens

our powers and binds the ties of kinship.

So make Khalil's celebration a bond of amity

between Egypt and her sister, and of peace.

And ask God to perpetuate for us

    Abbas's reign, flourishing and smiling.

He is our hope and the guardian of our sanctuary.

May God strengthen his reign and make it endure.
