Have mercy on us, sons of the Jews; enough for you

is the money you have amassed through your shrewdness.

And spare our minds, and leave humankind alone,

by the mystery of the Torah and the Talmud.

Do not add to the bonds further snares

of song between tambourine and oud.

Woe to you! Indeed, Jacques has gone so far

that, among his people, he has surpassed David.

Silence him—may God never silence that

voice, the voice of the love-enthralled songster.

Or let him be—if he sings, let his ransom be

every soul and all that exists.
