From Egypt I glimpsed that crown and moon,

so I said to poetry: "This is the poet's day."

O empire, above whose banners stands a lion,

whose outbursts the world fears when he roars.

    وَاليَومَ فَوقَ ذُراكِ البَدرُ قَد سَفَرا

    Yesterday the sun shone brightly upon you;

and today the full moon has unveiled itself above your heights.

    إِن غابَتِ الشَمسُ أَولَت تاجَها القَمَرا

    Your throne passes from a sun to a moon;

if the sun sets, it bestows its crown upon the moon.

Who is there to oppose you, when the fates run

as you wish, and the world belongs to whoever prevails?

    وَإِن كَشَرتِ لَنا عَن نابِهِ كَشَرا

    If you smile upon us, time itself smiles;

and if you bare your teeth at us, it bares its fang.

Do not marvel at a realm whose flank is impregnable:

without cooperation, you would see no trace of it.

Your Lord never toppled a throne guarded through the night

by justice, nor prolonged the rule of a betrayer.

I knew them well, and saw the people keeping vigil

over their public services, while the state too kept vigil.

They consulted one another on affairs of state, from king

to minister, to the man who plants the trees.

And their horseman was a thunderbolt in war,

and the statesman among them a wary bird.

On land is a poised steed whose hooves trampled

mines of gold when it spurned the clods of earth.

And on the seas are fleets which, when they rage,

you see volcanoes within them hurling sparks.

And in peace, while the days are smiling, they are

brides arrayed in coquetry and modesty,

until, when war breaks out, you see in them

desert ghouls—yet they tear at stone.

    Today Edward shines over nations

as though they were the sea, surging with mighty waves.

If rain fell upon a land shaded by them,

their heads would turn the rain away from its face.

Today the crown of glory reverently kisses

a head that governs a realm and watches over humankind.

He directs affairs from Egypt to Aden,

then India, then the Cape, until he traverses the islands.

The nights made peace with him when it proved beyond them

to bind what he had loosened or straighten what he had bent.

Edward, may you endure, and may the realm endure in prosperity,

and may your army remain victorious across the horizons.

Through peace and sound judgment, you have spared the blood

that drenched the ravines and drenched the keen, hard-tempered sword.

    وَنَحنُ نَذكُرُ إِن عَدّوا لَنا عُمَرا

    They remember you when they number their just men;

and we, when they number ours, remember Umar.

It is as though you run along his path

in justice, forbearance, and punishment of the insolent.
