عُهودَthe days of كِرامٍnoble men فيكِwithin you صَلّواprayed وَسَلَّمواand invoked peace
O Sophia, the time for parting has come; remember
the days of noble men who prayed and invoked peace within you.
إِذاif عُدتِyou return يَوماًone day لِلصَليبِto the Cross وَأَهلِهِand its people
وَحَلّىand adorn نَواحيكِyour precincts المَسيحُChrist وَمَريَمُand Mary
If one day you return to the Cross and its people,
and Christ and Mary adorn your precincts,
وَدُقَّتand are rung نَواقيسٌbells وَقامَand rises مُزَمِّرٌa piper
مِنَfrom among الرومِthe Greeks فيin مِحرابِهِhis sanctuary يَتَرَنَّمُchanting
and bells are rung and a piper rises
from among the Greeks, chanting in his sanctuary,
فَلاthen do not تُنكِريdisown عَهدَthe age of المَآذِنِthe minarets إِنَّهُfor it
عَلىin the sight of اللَهِGod مِنthan عَهدِthe age of النَواقيسِthe bells أَكرَمُnobler
then do not disown the age of the minarets, for it
is nobler in God's sight than the age of the bells.
تَبارَكتَBlessed are You بَيتُthe House of القُدسِJerusalem جَذلانُjubilant آمِنٌsafe
وَلاwhile not يَأمَنُis safe البَيتُthe House العَتيقُancient المُحَرَّمُinviolable
Blessed are You! Jerusalem's Holy House is jubilant and safe,
while the ancient, inviolable House is not safe.
أَيُرضيكَDoes it please You أَنthat تَغشىoverrun سَنابِكُthe hooves of خَيلِهِمtheir horses
حِماكَYour sanctuary وَأَنand that يُمنىbe afflicted الحَطيمُthe Hatim وَزَمزَمُand Zamzam
Does it please You that their horses' hooves should overrun
Your sanctuary, and that the Hatim and Zamzam should be afflicted?
وَكَيفَAnd how يَذِلُّare brought low المُسلِمونَthe Muslims وَبَينَهُمwhile among them
كِتابُكَYour Book يُتلىis recited كُلَّevery يَومٍday وَيُكرَمُand is honored
And how are Muslims brought low, while among them
Your Book is recited every day and honored?
نَبِيُّكَYour Prophet مَحزونٌgrief-stricken وَبَيتُكَand Your House مُطرِقٌbowing its head
حَياءًin shame وَأَنصارُwhile the champions of الحَقيقَةِtruth نُوَّمُasleep
Your Prophet is grief-stricken, and Your House bows its head
in shame, while the champions of truth lie asleep.
عَصَيناWe disobeyed وَخالَفناand rebelled فَعاقَبتَso You punished عادِلاًjustly
وَحَكَّمتَand You set in authority فيناover us اليَومَtoday مَنthose who لَيسَdo not يَرحَمُshow mercy
We disobeyed and rebelled, so You punished us justly,
and today You have set over us those who show no mercy.
