Al-Mughirah's client, may no morning cloud shower you

with God's mercy, so long as its morning clouds pour.

    في ذِمَّةِ اللَهِ عاليها وَماضيها

    You tore his skin, filled with aspirations;

the lofty and steadfast among them are in God's keeping.

You stabbed al-Faruq's flank, seeking vengeance

upon the upright faith in the loftiest of its manifestations.

So the realm of Islam became bewildered,

lamenting its pain when its healer died.

He departed and left it firm as a mountain,

and adorned its dwellings with justice and piety.

Pickaxes rebound from it while it stands,

and many are the destroyers throughout its reaches.

Until, when its destroyer took charge of it,

ruin cried out against it, and its heights collapsed.

Alas for a realm that only yesterday had filled

the regions of the East with plenty from its bounty!

How often it shaded them and sheltered them with wings

that hid them from the eyes of Time!

Their primary feathers were fashioned from providential care,

and their secondary feathers from the very essence of piety.

By God, none treacherously destroyed it of old or schemed against it,

or uprooted its spreading tree, except its own clients.

Had it remained among Arabs of pure lineage,

no herald through the ages would have announced its death.

Ah, if only they had heard what Umar said,

as his soul had reached his collarbones:

"Do not multiply your clients, for they have

ambitions that smiles of weakness conceal."
