    Is that coyness, or laziness?

Or feigned forgetfulness on your part, or boredom?

Or are you drowning in delight,

or drunk on cups of bliss?

Or—may God protect you—are you in distress,

    or relying on excuses?

Or are you yearning, lovestruck, distraught,

worn thin by amorous verse and love poetry?

Or are you a rich man, now preoccupied

with his wealth, gain, and hope?

Or has a slanderer spoken ill of us to you,

so doubt has engulfed you, O hero?

A month has passed, and after it came

twice its length, while my mind remains preoccupied.

No letter from you quenches what

    has come to blaze within my heart;

no, nor a reply to console me,

    or one containing a greeting.

    My friend, take no offense—

    you, O son of al-Babili!
