I have shattered the reed pen; do not be surprised.

And I have spurned eloquence; do not reproach me.

For you, O Egypt, are no home for the writer,

nor are you a goodly land.

And how many a writer in you, O Egypt,

has dismissed his pen and written nothing!

    فَقَد ضاقَ بي مِنكِ ما ضاقَ بي

    So do not blame me for this silence;

for I have suffered from you what I have suffered.

Am I to admire in you, on the day of concord,

the silence of lifeless things and the play of a child?

And how often people before us have raged

at the stripping away of rights, while we have not raged!

O budding generation of this age, the foreigner

is hard at work in Egypt; do not play.

They say there is good for us in the young,

yet the young are worse than the foreigner.

    Is al-Azbakiyya the sons' dwelling,

while the father's dwelling is among the mosques?

And how many absurdities there are in Egypt,

as Abu al-Tayyib said of her!

Affairs pass, and life grows bitter,

while we remain in a playground of idle amusement.

And a people flee from good deeds

as the healthy flee the mangy.

And newspapers buzz with the buzzing of flies,

while others launch attacks on those nearest to them.

And this one seeks refuge in the prince's palace,

and invites others beneath his ampler shade.

And this one seeks refuge in the ambassador's palace,

and speaks at length of his sweeter waters.

And this one shouts along with the shouters,

    with neither aim nor purpose.

And they said, 'An interloper—may he perish!'

Yet what a fine interloper, in my view!

He saw us asleep, and we have yet to awaken,

so he rolled up his sleeves for toil and gain.

And what blame is his if he has outstripped us,

while we have not labored for our livelihood?

We have grown used to idleness—oh, if only we

had grown used to idleness without lying!

And they said, 'Al-Mu'ayyad is in a plight

into which Ash'ab-like greed has cast him.'

Passion summoned him in middle age,

so he went stark mad for the Prophet's daughter.

Then the Throne and its bearers cried out over her,

and the tomb in Yathrib cried out over her.

And men called for his downfall,

and said, 'He has changed colors in his convictions.'

And they counted misdeeds against him,

thousands that cycle through the ages.

And they said, 'An interloper in the Messenger's household

    has raided the noblest lineage.'

And Abu Khatwa endorsed their claim

with a ruling sharper than a sword's edge.

Then why, upon his house, do congratulations

    fall like pouring rain?

And why do delegations at his door

    bring glad tidings in procession?

And why has the caliph bestowed on him

    a medal befitting a proud man's breast?

So, O nation, whose description defeats

the mind of the eloquent speaker and the finest orator!

Truth is indeed lost among us,

and the innocent burns alongside the guilty.

And among us the wise imam is denied his due,

while among us the ignorant fool is honored.

To the East I send a loving greeting,

even if the East has bowed its head to the West.

Indeed, it was fertile in time's drought,

then grew barren in a fertile age.
