Divert the Nile and hide the light from us,

And blot out the star and deny us the breeze.

And fill the sea, if you wish, with ships,

And fill the sky, if you wish, with missiles.

And station, for oppression, in every handspan,

A constable who rends the skin with his whip.

Indeed, we shall never forsake our pledge to Egypt,

Until you see us in the dust as crumbling bones.

A storm preserved your kingdom and protected you,

And once spared you a grievous calamity.

It destroyed the enemy Armada, so you triumphed,

And attained great stature in the East.

Then you acted justly for a little while, and grew oppressive,

And left behind a shameful era on the Nile.

So we witnessed oppression that is called jus-

tice, and friendship that makes a dear friend drink scalding water.

So beware the wrath of storms, for I

Have already seen the outcome turn dire.
