عَنِfrom المَدينَةِMedina تَبكيهِit weeps for him وَيَبكيهاand he weeps for it
Beauty wronged Nasr and drove him into exile
Beauty wronged Nasr and banished him
from Medina, which wept for him as he wept for her.
from Medina, which weeps for him as he weeps for it.
وَكَمand how often رَمَتstruck قَسِماتُfeatures الحُسنِbeauty صاحِبَهاtheir possessor
وَأَتعَبَتand wearied قَصَباتُprize reeds السَبقِvictory حاويهاtheir holder
How often beauty’s features have struck their possessor,
And how often beauty's features have struck their possessor,
and the trophies of preeminence have wearied the one who wins them.
and victory's prize reeds have wearied their holder.
وَزَهرَةُand the flower الرَوضِthe garden لَولاwere it not for حُسنُbeauty رَونَقِهاits splendor
لَماwould not have اِستَطالَتreached out عَلَيهاtoward it كَفُّthe hand جانيهاits picker
Were the meadow’s blossom not so splendidly beautiful,
And were it not for the garden flower's lovely splendor,
no plucker’s hand would have reached out against it.
its picker's hand would not have reached for it.
كانَتthere was لَهُbelonging to him لِمَّةٌa head of hair فَينانَةٌluxuriant عَجَبٌa marvel
عَلىupon جَبينٍa brow خَليقٍfit أَنto يُحَلّيهاadorn them
He had luxuriant locks—a marvel—
He had wondrous, luxuriant locks
upon a brow itself worthy to adorn them.
upon a brow fit to adorn them.
وَكانَand he would أَنّىwherever مَشىwalk مالَتinclined عَقائِلُهاits noblewomen
شَوقاًin longing إِلَيهِtoward him وَكادَand nearly الحُسنُbeauty يَسبيهاtake them captive
Wherever he walked, Medina’s noble ladies inclined toward him,
And wherever he walked, its noblewomen leaned
longing for him; his beauty nearly took them captive.
toward him in longing, and beauty nearly took them captive.
هَتَفنَthey cried out تَحتَbeneath اللَياليthe nights بِاِسمِهِcalling his name شَغَفاًin passion
وَلِلحِسانِand for beautiful women تَمَنٍّyearning فيin لَياليهاtheir nights
Infatuated, they cried his name beneath the cover of night,
They cried his name under cover of night, in passion,
for in Medina’s nights the fair women nursed their longings.
and beautiful women have their longings in their nights.
جَزَزتَyou sheared لِمَّتَهُhis locks لَمّاwhen أُتيتَyou were presented بِهِwith him
فَفاقَso surpassed عاطِلُهاthe one bare of them فيin الحُسنِbeauty حاليهاthe one adorned with them
You clipped his locks when he was brought before you,
You sheared his locks when he was brought before you,
yet shorn of them, he surpassed in beauty one adorned by them.
and the brow bare of them surpassed the one adorned with them in beauty.
فَصِحتَso you shouted فيهِat him تَحَوَّلdepart عَنfrom مَدينَتِهِمtheir city
فَإِنَّهاfor it is فِتنَةٌa temptation أَخشىI fear تَماديهاits going too far
Then you cried out at him, “Leave their city!
So you shouted at him, 'Depart from their city,
It is a temptation whose spread I fear.”
for it is a temptation I fear will go too far.'
وَفِتنَةُand the turmoil of الحُسنِbeauty إِنif هَبَّتblew نَوافِحُهاits wafting breezes
كَفِتنَةِlike the turmoil of الحَربِwar إِنif هَبَّتrose سَواقيهاits watercourses
For beauty’s temptation, when its fragrant breezes stir,
And beauty's turmoil, when its breezes blow,
is like war’s turmoil when its drivers surge forth.
is like war's turmoil when its currents rise.
