مَطالِعُrisings of سَعدٍgood fortune أَمor مَطالِعُrisings of أَقمارِmoons
تَجَلَّتshone forth بِهَذاat this العيدِfeast أَمor تِلكَthose أَشعاريmy poems
Are these risings of good fortune, or risings of moons,
Shining forth at this feast—or are those my poems?
إِلىto سُدَّةِthe court of العَبّاسِAbbas وَجَّهتُI addressed مِدحَتيmy praise
بِتَهنِئَةٍwith a congratulatory greeting شَوقِيَّةِShawqi-like in النَسجِweave مِعطارِfragrant
To Abbas's court I have addressed my praise,
With a fragrant greeting woven in Shawqi's style.
مَليكٌa king أَباحَpermitted العيدُthe feast لَثمَkissing يَمينِهِhis right hand
وَيالَيتَand if only ذاكَthat العيدَfeast يَبسُطُlays out أَعذاريmy excuses
A king—the feast has granted leave to kiss his right hand;
And if only that feast would lay out my excuses,
وَيَحمِلُand carries عَنّيon my behalf لِلعَزيزِto the mighty one تَحِيَّةًa greeting
وَيَذكُرُand mentions شَيئاًsomething مِنof حَديثيmy talk وَأَخباريand my news
And carry a greeting from me to the mighty one,
And mention something of my words and my news.
لِآلِto the house of عَلِيٍّAli زينَةُthe adornment of المُلكِkingship وِجهَتيmy direction
وَإِنand if قيلَit is said شيعِيٌّa Shiite فَقَدthen indeed نِلتُI have attained أَوطاريmy desires
Toward Ali's house, the adornment of kingship, I turn;
And if I am called a Shiite, I have attained my desires.
أَحِنُّI yearn لِذِكراهُمfor their remembrance وَأَشدوand I sing بِمَدحِهِمin their praise
كَأَنّيas though I were بِجَوفِin the heart of اللَيلِthe night هاتِفُa caller أَسحارِpredawn hours
I yearn at the thought of them and sing their praise,
As though, in the heart of night, I were a caller before dawn.
وَأُنشِدُand I recite أَشعاريmy poems وَإِنand even if قالَsays حاسِديmy envier
نَعَمyes شاعِرٌa poet لَكِنَّهُbut he غَيرُnot مِكثارِprolific
And I recite my poems, even if my envier says:
"Yes, a poet—but not a prolific one."
فَحَسبيso enough for me مِنَof الأَشعارِpoetry بَيتٌone verse أَزينُهُI adorn it
بِذِكرِكَwith mention of you ياO عَبّاسُAbbas فيin رَفعِraising مِقداريmy standing
For one verse of poetry is enough for me—one I adorn
With your name, O Abbas, to raise my standing.
كَذاthus فَليَكُنso let it be مَدحُpraise of المُلوكِkings وَهَكَذاand thus

يَسوسُgoverns القَوافيthe rhymes شاعِرٌa poet غَيرُnot ثَرثارِa babbler
Thus let the praise of kings be, and thus
A poet who is no babbler governs his rhymes,
وَيَسلُبُand robs أَصدافَthe shells of البِحارِthe seas بَناتَهاtheir daughters (pearls)
بِنَفثَةِwith a breath of سِحرٍmagic أَوor بِخَطرَةِwith a flash of أَفكارِthought
And robs the seas' shells of their daughters,
With a breath of magic or a flash of thought.

Meanings and words, just as Ahmad wished,
Have embraced Bashshar's vigor and Mahyar's delicacy.

When eyes gaze upon them, they deem them—
For the beauty of the words' harmony—like a flowing brook.
أَمَولايَO my lord هَذاthis العيدُfeast وافاكَhas come to you فَاِحبُهُso endow it

O my lord, this feast has come to you; endow it
With a robe of prosperity, good fortune, and favor.

And bless it, and scatter some of your good fortune over it,
And crown it with glad tidings, and bid it shine forth.
فَلاso may never زالَتِcease الأَعيادُthe feasts تَبغيseek سُعودَهاtheir good fortune
لَدىwith مَلِكٍa king يَسريjourneys by night عَلىunder عَدلِهِhis justice الساريthe night traveler
So may feasts forever seek their good fortune
With a king under whose justice the night traveler journeys safely.
وَلاand may never زِلتَyou cease فيon دَستِthe throne of الجَلالِmajesty مُؤَيَّداًsupported
وَلاand may never زالَcease هَذاthis المُلكُsovereignty فيin هَذِهِthis الدارِhouse
And may you ever be upheld on the throne of majesty,
And may this sovereignty ever remain in this house.
