    Congratulations, O most august king,

on your new throne and all it shelters.

    Ascend Ismail's spacious throne,

for you are worthy of kingship's scepter.

And fortify it with kindness and justice,

for kindness and justice are kingship's fortress.

Revive among us the way of the two Umars,

for among us you are God's shadow.

The throne gained honor and swelled with pride when

the independent monarch took his seat upon it.

And the crown rejoiced when it surmounted a brow

upon which rest majesty and nobility.

It wished to rest upon one unbowed,

before whom calamities bow, while he does not.

Now it has gained its wish and is content,

so here it is, taking pride in its wearer.

You were never a stranger to lofty deeds,

nor was the crown that has risen higher through you.

Indeed, ever since you came to be—and I do not exaggerate—

you have been a sword for the throne, never blunted.

For how often you have checked the fury of calamities,

and how great your bounty throughout the Nile's lands!

And there is no gathering for charity but

a downpour has streamed upon it from your hands.

For the poor have long known your generosity,

and the great already knew your high standing.

Two thrones are yours: this is Egypt's throne,

and this one has its place within hearts.

So harmonize the bond between them through judgment

and resolve that neither falters nor tires.

For a throne not surrounded by hearts

is surrounded by calamities and fades away.

O father of the peasant, how many favors you have bestowed

bear witness to the generosity within you!

And blessings—however much I dwell on them

and their qualities, I still say too little.

You cared for the peasant's condition until

drought grew fearful of visiting the land.

And how could it visit a land you have traveled through,

when you are rain that no miserliness has withheld?

And how much dead land you have brought to life,

so that it came to be sought out and put to use.

And its people enjoyed abundance after dearth,

and comfort and extra bounty overflowed upon them.

And how many a wounded man in Egypt you have aided,

over whom death looms from close at hand!

You have been a shield for every destitute soul,

and family when his own family offered him no help.

And in your father's reign you were a resourceful youth,

with judgment to guide him, and action.

You are summoned to every great task, and acquit yourself

as a seasoned man whom reason urges on.

You took charge of affairs in youth and middle age,

yet neither youth nor mature man has matched your reach.

And you have long put events to the test,

and one like you is the man to try and test them.

You were the life of the Consultative Council,

and a beacon when the people lost their way.

Thus no ingrate visited its precincts,

nor did a paralyzed member sit within it.

You did not leave it until they came to their senses

and recovered from the ailments of their lives.

So live as the Nile's unbowed sultan,

with power to bind and loose within his realm.

And ally yourself with those people; they are noble,

blessed in disposition wherever they settle.

They have a realm upon the Thames, and now

its summits shine above lofty glories.

And no people in the West are like their people:

they have drunk of virtue, then drunk again.

So if you befriend them, they are true to you in affection,

and if you search, there is none like them.

And if you consult them when the matter is serious,

you gain from them a judgment that never errs.

And if you call them, you are answered by their

    fleets and swords drawn forth.

So stretch the cords of friendship to them, and lift

us up, for leading us toward good is easy.

And lessen in us the East's affliction,

for we are a burden upon the men of the West.

When calamities descend upon them there,

anxiety and preoccupation beset us here.

    تُنازِلُنا الخُطوبُ وَنَحنُ عُزلُ

    Bewildered, we can find no rest;

calamities assail us while we are unarmed.

So welcome to the guide toward greatness!

Now go forth, O Hussein, and we shall follow.

And make us happy under your reign, the best of reigns,

through which our days grow clear and sweet.

    وَسَيفُكَ قاطِعٌ وَنَداكَ جَزلُ

    For your command meets obedience, and your approval is a boon;

and your sword is sharp, and your generosity abundant.
