I devoted my life to you alone, short though it is,

And fought against longing for you, mighty though it is.

And in my breast I founded a kingdom for your beauty,

Its army is love, and loyalty its envoy.

My heart is its throne, and you its king,

And curtains of those ribs screen you.

And never once has my breast rebelled against you,

Nor has any prince but you dwelt in my heart.

I concealed it, so they said, 'A poet who denies love!'

Yet who but my breast is versed in passion?

Had I wished, I would have distracted the stars from their night journey,

And halted the spheres in which they revolve,

And set the skin of night ablaze with a sigh of mine,

A sigh of passion from which sparks fly.

But I hid what I felt; indeed,

Every passion has a censurer and a defender.

I see love as abasement, and complaint as humiliation,

And it befits me to keep both humiliations hidden.

And I have two kinds of love poetry: one I make public,

And another kept hidden in the folds of my heart.

But for the obstinacy of the envious, there would never have appeared

A veiled allusion to my hidden secret of love.

Nor would my fingers have drawn this reed-pen

    For complaint; but obstinacy provokes.

Yet I do not take despair as my mount,

Nor do I make much of adversity when it raids.

For often death has swerved from me, the sword unsheathed,

And the matter grew easy for me, though it was hard.

And many a glance, while Time was heedless, has eased

Sorrows whose blaze burns between my ribs.

For the ailing lover may be healed by a visit,

And by a word the fallen and the captive may be saved.

May that new year gladden me

With good tidings—yet is there a herald of joy for the wretched?

And may the lord of the royal couch cast a glance my way,

Through which sorrow's night clears and grows bright.

A king whose praise, when the reed-pen sings it,

Sends a thrill and joy through noble deeds.

O my lord, the East's star has indeed shone forth,

And after death, its hour of resurrection has come.

It hoped for good fortune when it saw you made king,

And above you is a light from the light of the Guardian.

An age passed as the West bore down with its might

On me, while I had no ally among mankind,

Until God granted the falcon a resurgence

That blunted calamity's edge, sharp though it was.

The nation of Japan ran a race toward the heights,

And Egypt will follow in its footsteps.

Nor will the Egyptian be kept from catching up with it,

While you champion those who seek greatness.

So take al-Faruq's stand, and look upon a nation

That points toward you with the very kernels of its hearts.

And consult none but resolve in striving for the heights,

For none but it is a faithful counselor and adviser.

For your throne is guarded, and your Lord is its guardian,

And you are sovereign over the kingdom of hearts.
