رَأَيتَyou held فيin الدينِthe faith آراءًviews مُوَفَّقَةًwell-guided
فَأَنزَلَso sent down اللَهُGod قُرآناًQur’anic revelation يُزَكّيهاaffirms them
You held well-guided views on matters of faith,
You had well-founded views about religion,
So God sent down Qur’anic revelation affirming them.
Then Allah sent down a Quran to purify them.
وَكُنتَand you were أَوَّلَthe first مَنone who قَرَّتwas gladdened بِصُحبَتِهِby his companionship
عَينُthe eye of الحَنيفَةِthe true faith وَاِجتازَتand surpassed أَمانيهاits hopes
And you were the first whose companionship gladdened
You were the first whose eyes were delighted
The true faith’s eye, and it surpassed its hopes.
By the companionship of the Hanifah, and her wishes were fulfilled.
قَدindeed كُنتَyou were أَعدىthe fiercest of أَعاديهاits enemies فَصِرتَthen you became لَهاfor it
بِنِعمَةِby the grace of اللَهِGod حِصناًa fortress مِنagainst أَعاديهاits enemies
You had been its fiercest enemy, then became for it,
You had been the bitterest of her enemies, but by the grace of Allah,
By God’s grace, a fortress against its enemies.
You became a fortress protecting her from her enemies.
خَرَجتَyou went out تَبغيseeking أَذاهاharm to it فيthrough مُحَمَّدِهاits Muhammad
وَلِلحَنيفَةِand for the true faith جَبّارٌa Mighty One يُواليهاsupports it
You went out seeking to harm it through its Muhammad,
You went out seeking to harm her through her Muhammad,
Yet the true faith had a Mighty One who stood by it.
Yet the Hanifah has an Almighty Lord who supports her.
فَلَمso not تَكَدyou nearly تَسمَعُyou hear الآياتِthe verses بالِغَةًdeeply moving
حَتّىuntil اِنكَفَأتَyou turned back تُناويyou oppose مَنwhoever يُناويهاopposes it
Scarcely had you heard the deeply moving verses
No sooner did you hear the eloquent verses
When you turned back to oppose whoever opposed it.
Than you turned back, intending to oppose those who opposed her.
سَمِعتَyou heard سورَةَthe surah of طَهَTa-Ha مِنfrom مُرَتِّلِهاits reciter
فَزَلزَلَتso it shook نِيَّةًan intention قَدalready كُنتَyou had been تَنويهاintending it
You heard Surah Ta-Ha from its reciter,
You heard Surah Ta Ha recited by its reciter,
So it shook the intention you had been harboring.
So it shook the intention you had harbored.
وَقُلتَand you said فيهاabout it مَقالاًa statement لاnot يُطاوِلُهُcan rival it
قَولُthe words of المُحِبِّthe lover الَّذيwho قَدindeed باتَspent the night يُطريهاpraising it
And you spoke words about it that could not be rivaled
And you spoke words about it that cannot be matched
By the words of a lover who spent the night praising it.
By the words of a lover who stays up night chanting her praises.
وَيَومَand on the day أَسلَمتَyou embraced Islam عَزَّgrew strong الحَقُّthe truth وَاِرتَفَعَتand were lifted
عَنfrom كاهِلِthe shoulders of الدينِthe faith أَثقالٌburdens يُعانيهاit endures them
And on the day you embraced Islam, truth grew strong, and lifted
The day you became Muslim, the truth triumphed and
From faith’s shoulders were burdens it had borne.
Heavy burdens were lifted from the religion’s shoulders.
وَصاحَand cried out فيهِon it (that day) بِلالٌBilal صَيحَةًa cry خَشَعَتbowed humbly
لَهاbefore it القُلوبُthe hearts وَلَبَّتand answered أَمرَthe command of باريهاtheir Maker
And on that day Bilal raised a cry that humbled
Bilal cried out a cry at which hearts were humbled,
Hearts, which answered their Maker’s command.
And obeyed the command of their Creator.
فَأَنتَso you فيin زَمَنِthe time of المُختارِthe Chosen One مُنجِدُهاits helper
وَأَنتَand you فيin زَمَنِthe time of الصِدّيقِal-Siddiq (the Truthful One) مُنجيهاits deliverer
So in the Chosen One’s time, you were its helper,
So you are the helper of the Chosen One in his time,
And in al-Siddiq’s time, you were its deliverer.
And you are the savior of the Truthful One in his time.
كَمِhow often اِستَراكَchose you رَسولُthe Messenger of اللَهِGod مُغتَبِطاًdelighted

How often God’s Messenger chose you, delighted
How often did Allah’s Messenger shelter you, delighted
By the wisdom he found in you at times of counsel.
By the wisdom you possess when giving counsel.
