أَلبَسوكِthey clothed you الدِماءَthe blood فَوقَupon الدِماءِthe blood
أَلبَسوكِ الدِماءَ فَوقَ الدِماءِ
وَأَرَوكِand they showed you العِداءَthe enmity بَعدَafter العِداءِthe enmity
وَأَرَوكِ العِداءَ بَعدَ العِداءِ
They clothed you in blood upon blood,
And showed you enmity after enmity.
فَلَبِستِso you wore النَجيعَthe gore مِنsince عَهدِthe time of قابيCain (name fragment)
فَلَبِستِ النَجيعَ مِن عَهدِ قابي
لَcompletion of 'Cain' وَشاهَدتِand you witnessed مَصرَعَthe death of الأَبرِياءِthe innocent
لَ وَشاهَدتِ مَصرَعَ الأَبرِياءِ
So you wore gore since the days of Cain,
And witnessed the death of the innocent.
فَلَكِso you have العُذرُthe excuse إِنif قَسَوتِyou grew harsh وَإِنand if خُنbetrayed (verb fragment)
فَلَكِ العُذرُ إِن قَسَوتِ وَإِن خُن
تِyou (feminine singular verb ending) وَإِنand if كُنتِyou were مَصدَراًa source لِلشَقاءِof misery
تِ وَإِن كُنتِ مَصدَراً لِلشَقاءِ
So you are excused if you grow harsh, and if you betray,
And if you are a source of misery.
غَلِطَerred الناسُthe people ماnot طَغىtransgressed جَبَلُthe mountain of الناthe fire (word fragment)
غَلِطَ الناسُ ما طَغى جَبَلُ النا
رِcompletion of 'fire' بِإِرسالِby sending نَفثَةٍa puff فيinto الهَواءِthe air
رِ بِإِرسالِ نَفثَةٍ في الهَواءِ
The people erred: the mountain of fire did not transgress
By sending a puff into the air.
أَحرَجواthey distressed صَدرَthe breast of أُمِّهِits mother فَأَراهُمso it showed them
أَحرَجوا صَدرَ أُمِّهِ فَأَراهُم
بَعضَsome of ماwhat أَضمَرَتshe harbored مِنَof البُرَحاءِthe anguish
بَعضَ ما أَضمَرَت مِنَ البُرَحاءِ
They distressed its mother's breast, so it showed them
Some of the anguish she had harbored.
أَسخَطوهاthey angered her فَصابَرَتهُمthen she patiently endured them زَماناًfor a time
أَسخَطوها فَصابَرَتهُم زَماناً
ثُمَّthen أَنحَتshe fell upon عَلَيهِمُthem بِالجَزاءِwith retribution
ثُمَّ أَنحَت عَلَيهِمُ بِالجَزاءِ
They angered her, yet she patiently endured them for a time,
Then she fell upon them with retribution.
أَيُّهاO الناسُpeople إِنif يَكُنis ذاكَthat سُخطُthe wrath of الthe
أَيُّها الناسُ إِن يَكُن ذاكَ سُخطُ ال
أَرضِearth ماذاwhat يَكونُwould be سُخطُthe wrath of السَماءِheaven
أَرضِ ماذا يَكونُ سُخطُ السَماءِ
O people, if that is the earth's wrath,
What would the wrath of heaven be?
إِنَّindeed فيin عُلوِthe heights مَسرَحاًa stage لِلمَقاديfor fate's decrees (word fragment)
إِنَّ في عُلوِ مَسرَحاً لِلمَقادي
رِcompletion of 'fate's decrees' وَفيand in الأَرضِthe earth مَكمَناًa hiding place لِلقَضاءِfor fate
رِ وَفي الأَرضِ مَكمَناً لِلقَضاءِ
Indeed, on high is a stage for the decrees of fate,
And in the earth a hiding place for fate.
فَاِتَّقواso beware of الأَرضَthe earth وَالسَماءَand heaven سَواءًalike
فَاِتَّقوا الأَرضَ وَالسَماءَ سَواءً
وَاِتَّقواand beware of النارَthe fire فيin الثَرىthe soil وَالفَضاءِand the open sky
وَاِتَّقوا النارَ في الثَرى وَالفَضاءِ
So beware of the earth and heaven alike,
And beware of fire in the soil and the open sky.
