    He stilled my tongue and loosed my tears—

    a herald who deafened my ears with news of your death.

    ما إِن أُريدُ لِطَوقِها نَزعا

    Your kindness has encircled my neck;

    I have no wish at all to remove its collar.

    وَقَضَيتَ أَنتَ وَكُنتَ لي دِرعا

    The Imam died, and he had been my shelter;

    and you have passed away—you who were my shield.

    So let the envious gloat over a man

    whose hopes lie slain at evening and at dawn.

    And let the days launch their assault:

    the flowing water has run dry, and the pasture grown barren.

    Since his passing, I see paralysis

    in glory's hand, and its nose cut off.

    And I see generosity lonely and restless,

    and I see nobility with its dwelling deserted.

    Abu Hasan once lived in this world,

    bestowing kindness and excelling in good deeds.

    If a man of rank brought a praiseworthy deed,

    one alone—he outdid him with a matching pair.

    So when you looked at his fingertips,

    dripping with dew, you thought his palm held a spring.

    وَسَلِ المَعارِفَ كَم جَنَت نَفعا

    Ask me, for I am one of his protégés;

    and ask learning how much benefit it has reaped.

    The mother of languages grew fertile through him,

    with abundance that made her udder flow for her people.

    By God, were it not that they might say, 'He has introduced

    an innovation,' I would have circled his grave seven times.

    Life has exhausted my endurance; and whoever

    loses his loved ones finds his endurance exhausted.

    And I now dwell in a land where I am beset

    by evils, and can see no defense.

    How many a friend of mine treats me kindly,

    yet it is as though a viper lay beneath his clothes!

    He goes about, and the softness of his touch conceals

    from me the paths of a slithering snake.

    How often their pickaxes tried to tear me down,

    but God refused, and so raised me higher.

    I am now alone, with none to champion me

    but eloquence, while they have become a throng.

    And their desire is to shatter in my hand

    a pen that stirred the dust of battle against them.

    And many a noble man has been maligned by a few

    unfit even to be a strap for his sandal.

    Who is there to comfort me and guard me

    in this world, and who will care for me?

    No influence shields me, nor any support

    wards off scheming and foul abuse from me.

    With your help I repelled every assault,

    and answered, in the gravest crisis, whenever called,

    and helped every distressed soul recover from a stumble,

    and fulfilled obligations and made endeavors succeed,

    فَوَدَدتُ لَو كُنتُ الَّذي يُنعى

    until the herald announced the death of Abu Hasan;

    then I wished I were the one whose death was announced.

    The foes were enraged and tried, in their folly,

    to sever the cord of affection between us.

    They sought its severance, and incurred

    injustice, giving more cause to keep it joined.

    في كُلِّ صالِحَةٍ لَها فَرعا

    O great tree of goodness, which has spread

    a branch of its own into every good deed;

    فَوقَ الكَنانَةِ نورُها شَعّا

    and beacon of excellence, raised

    above al-Kinana, its light shining forth;

    ما رَدَّ مِسكيناً وَلا دَعّا

    and a refuge for sustenance, whose Ahmad

    never turned a poor man back or thrust him away;

    I have mourned you in verse amid immense anguish,

    and sorrow splits my heart apart.

    No wonder if I have failed to do you justice, for

    the loss is immense and exceeds my endurance.

    I shall give you your due in elegy, as

    you would wish, if no return is possible.
