وَقَولَةٍand a saying لِعَلِيٍّto Ali قالَهاhe said it عُمَرٌUmar
أَكرِمhow noble بِسامِعِهاits hearer أَعظِمhow great بِمُلقيهاits speaker
And a saying that Umar spoke to Ali—
A saying of Umar to Ali, how magnificent in its speaker, how great in its utterer
How noble its hearer, how great its speaker!
I will burn down your house and leave nothing of it
حَرَقتُI will burn دارَكَyour house لاnot أُبقيI show mercy عَلَيكَto you بِهاin it
إِنif لَمnot تُبايِعyou pledge allegiance وَبِنتُand the daughter of المُصطَفىthe Chosen One فيهاin it
“I will burn your house; I will not spare you within it,
If you do not pledge allegiance, with the daughter of Mustafa in it
if you do not pledge allegiance—even with the Chosen One's daughter inside.”
None but Abu Hafs would dare say it
ماnot كانَwas غَيرُother than أَبيAbu (father of) حَفصٍHafs يَفوهُutters بِهاit
أَمامَbefore فارِسِthe knight of عَدنانٍAdnan وَحاميهاand its defender
None but Abu Hafs would utter those words
Before the horseman of Adnan, and its protector
before Adnan's knight and defender.
Both have resolved for the truth
كِلاهُماboth of them فيin سَبيلِthe cause of الحَقِّtruth عَزمَتُهُhis resolve
لاnot تَنثَنيbends أَوunless يَكونَis الحَقُّtruth ثانيهاwhat bends it
Both have a resolve, in the cause of truth,
Neither to falter, nor for the truth to be secondary
that will not bend unless truth itself bends it.
So remember them both and have mercy whenever they are recalled
فَاِذكُرهُماso remember them both وَتَرَحَّمand pray for mercy كُلَّماwhenever ذَكَرواthey mention
أَعاظِماًgreat men أُلِّهواwere deified فيin الكَونِthe world تَأليهاdeification
So remember them both, and pray for mercy upon them whenever people mention
As the greatest of all, deified in creation by their veneration
great men deified in this world.
