    وَنادَيتُ قَومي فَاِحتَسَبتُ حَياتي

    I returned to myself, then doubted my judgment;

And I called out to my people, then counted my life as lost.

They accused me of barrenness in my youth—would that I

Had been barren, so I would not have grieved at my enemies' words.

I gave birth, and when I could not find for my brides

Men and worthy matches, I buried my daughters alive.

I encompassed God's Book in wording and purpose,

Nor was I too narrow for its verses and admonitions.

How, then, can I be too narrow today to describe a machine

    And arrange names for inventions?

    فَهَل سَأَلوا الغَوّاصَ عَن صَدَفاتي

    I am the sea, in whose depths pearls lie hidden;

Have they, then, asked the diver about my shells?

So, alas for you! I wear away, and my beauties wear away,

And among you are my healers, though the remedy is scarce.

So do not leave me to time, for I

Fear for you, lest my hour of death arrive.

    وَكَم عَزَّ أَقوامٌ بِعِزِّ لُغاتِ

    I see the men of the West in glory and strength;

And how many peoples have gained glory through the glory of languages!

    فَيا لَيتَكُم تَأتونَ بِالكَلِماتِ

    They brought their people marvels through inventive skill;

So, if only you would bring forth words!

Does a cawing crow from the West delight you,

Calling for my burial alive in the springtime of my life?

And were you one day to read the omens of birds, you would know

What stumbling and dispersal lie beneath it.

May God water the bones in the heart of the Peninsula,

Who would grieve to see my spear bend.

They preserved my love through decay, and I preserved it

For them, with a heart of unending sorrow.

And I boasted to the people of the West—while the East hung its head

    In shame—of those decayed bones.

Every day in the newspapers I see a slippery slope

That brings me close to the grave without delay.

And I hear an uproar from the writers in Egypt,

So I know that those crying out are heralds of my death.

Will my people forsake me—may God forgive them—

For a language with no link to transmitters of tradition?

The taint of the Franks spread through it, just as did

The saliva of vipers through a stream of sweet water.

So it became like a garment containing seventy patches,

    Variegated in color, all different.

To the company of writers, while the assembly was thronged,

I laid out my hope after laying out my complaint:

So, either a life that raises the dead amid decay

And makes my remains sprout in those graves,

Or a death with no resurrection after it,

A death, by my life, beyond comparison with any other death.
