وَاِبنُand the son of الكِنانَةِKinana (Egypt, the Quiver) فيin حِماهُhis homeland يُضامُis wronged
A year has passed, O Su'ad, and another year,
A year has passed, O Suad, and a year
while the son of Kinana is wronged in his own homeland.
While Ibn Kinana is protected

They poured affliction upon the people: half of them
They have poured afflictions upon the servants, so half of them
levy taxes on the land, and half of them are rulers.
Collect tribute and half of them are rulers

I complain to the Palace of al-Dubara of the wrongs committed
I complain to the palace of Dubara about what he has done
by Sidqi the minister, and of what Allam exacted.
Tell the truth, O Minister, and what the tax collector has collected
قُلsay لِلمُحايِدِto the neutral one هَلdid ...? شَهِدتَyou witnessed دِماءَناour blood
تَجريflows وَهَلand is there?
Tell the neutral one: did you witness our blood
Say to the neutral one, have you witnessed our blood
flowing—and is there peace after bloodshed?
Flowing, and is there peace after blood?
سُفِكَتwas spilled مَوَدَّتُناour affection لَكُمfor you وَبَداand became clear لَناto us
أَنَّthat الحِيادَneutrality عَلىover الخِصامِhostility لِثامُa face-veil
Our affection for you was spilled, and it became clear to us
Our affection for you was spilled, and it became clear to us
that neutrality is a veil over hostility.
That neutrality in conflict is a mask
إِنَّindeed المَراجِلَthe boilers شَرُّهاtheir harm لاnot يُتَّقىis averted
حَتّىuntil يُنَفِّسَrelieves كَربَهُنَّtheir distress صِمامُa valve
Indeed, the boilers' harm cannot be averted
Verily, boilers - their evil cannot be avoided
until a valve relieves their distress.
Until their valves vent out their distress
لَمnot يَبقَremains فيناamong us مَنanyone who يُمَنّيgives hope to نَفسَهُhimself
بِوِدادِكُمof your affection فَوِدادُكُمfor your affection أَحلامُdreams
No one remains among us who gives himself hope
None remains among us who comforts himself
of your affection, for your affection is mere dreams.
With your affection, so your affection is but dreams
أَمِنَis it part of? السِياسَةِstatesmanship وَالمُروءَةِand honor أَنَّناthat we
نَشقىwe suffer بِكُمbecause of you فيin أَرضِناour land وَنُضامُand we are wronged
Is it in keeping with statesmanship and honor that we
Is it of politics and chivalry that we
suffer because of you in our own land and are wronged?
Suffer with you in our land and are suppressed?
إِنّاindeed we جَمَعناwe have gathered لِلجِهادِfor the struggle صُفوفَناour ranks
سَنَموتُwe shall die أَوor نَحياwe live وَنَحنُwhile we are كِرامُhonorable
Indeed, we have gathered our ranks for the struggle;
We have gathered our ranks for jihad
we shall die or live, while remaining honorable.
We will die or live, and we are dignified
وَدَعاand invoked عَلَيكَagainst you اللَهَGod فيin مِحرابِهِhis sanctuary
الشَيخُthe sheikh وَالقِسّيسُand the priest وَالحاخامُand the rabbi
And each in his sanctuary called upon God against you—
And the Sheikh, the Priest, and the Rabbi have prayed
the sheikh, the priest, and the rabbi:
Upon you in his shrine
لاهُمَّO God أَحيِrevive ضَميرَهُhis conscience لِيَذوقَهاso that he may taste it
غُصَصاًchoking pangs وَتَنسِفَand may shatter نَفسَهُhis soul الآلامُthe pains
O God, revive his conscience, so that he may taste it
If only his conscience would come alive so that he may taste
as choking anguish, and that pain may shatter his soul.
Agonies and sorrows that would rip his soul apart
