A wine in Babylon had been stored in a cistern—

So reported the rabbi of the Jews.

They deposited it in the belly of a dark wine jar,

And there they gave it glad tidings of immortality.

They asked the soothsayers about its drinker,

And about the cupbearer, and in which age.

So they answered them: a youth of vigor,

One of Egypt’s sons, endowed with merit and generosity,

Enamored of both the oud and the flute,

Fond of drinking while the people sleep.

His concern is bleeding wine jars and giving generously,

And his father’s concern is collecting coins.
