لِمَدحِكَto praise you مِنamong كُتّابِthe writers of مِصرَEgypt كَبيرُa great man
The Prince of Poetry in the East elegized you, and forward came
A great man among Egypt's writers to praise you.
وَلَستُand I do not أُباليI care حينَwhen أَرثيكَI elegize you بَعدَهُafter him
إِذاif قيلَit is said عَنّيabout me قَدindeed رَثاهُelegized him صَغيرُa lesser man
And I do not care, when I elegize you after him,
If they say of me, “A lesser man has elegized him.”
فَقَدfor indeed كُنتَyou were عَوناًa help لِلضَعيفِto the weak وَإِنَّنيand indeed I
ضَعيفٌweak وَماand not ليfor me فيin الحَياةِlife نَصيرُa champion
For you were a help to the weak, and I
Am weak, and in life I have no champion.
وَلَستُand I do not أُباليI care حينَwhen أَبكيكَI weep for you لِلوَرىfor humankind
حَوَتكَenfolded you جِنانٌgardens of Paradise أَمor حَواكَenclosed you سَعيرُa blazing fire
And I do not care, when I weep for you before mankind,
Whether gardens of Paradise have enfolded you or a blazing fire has engulfed you.
فَإِنّيfor indeed I أُحِبُّI love النابِغينَthe gifted لِعِلمِهِمfor their learning
وَأَعشَقُand I adore رَوضَthe garden of الفِكرِthought وَهوَand it is نَضيرُverdant
For I love the gifted for their learning,
And I adore the garden of thought, verdant as it is.
دَعَوتَyou called إِلىto عيسىJesus فَضَجَّتso clamored كَنائِسٌchurches
وَهُزَّand was shaken لَهاfor them عَرشٌa throne وَمادَand swayed سَريرُa royal seat
You called people to Jesus, and churches clamored,
And for them a throne was shaken, and a royal seat swayed.
وَقالَand said أُناسٌsome people إِنَّهُit is indeed قَولُthe utterance of مُلحِدٍan atheist
وَقالَand said أُناسٌsome people إِنَّهُhe is indeed لَبَشيرُsurely a bearer of glad tidings
And some people said, “It is an atheist's utterance,”
And some people said, “He is surely a bearer of glad tidings.”
وَلَولاand were it not for حُطامٌworldly wealth رَدَّwarded off عَنكَfrom you كِيادَهُمtheir plots
لَضِقتَyou would have felt constrained بِهِby it ذَرعاًin capacity وَساءَand worsened مَصيرُthe outcome
And had worldly wealth not warded their plots away from you,
You would have been overwhelmed by them, and your fate would have been grim.
وَلَكِنand yet حَماكَprotected you العِلمُlearning وَالرَأيُand judgment وَالحِجاand reason
وَمالٌand wealth إِذاwhen جَدَّgrew serious النِزالُthe struggle وَفيرُabundant
But learning, judgment, and reason protected you,
And wealth, abundant when the struggle grew serious.
إِذاif زُرتَyou visit رَهنَthe captive of المَحبَسَينِthe two prisons بِحُفرَةٍin a grave
بِهاin it الزُهدُasceticism ثاوٍdwells وَالذَكاءُand intelligence سَتيرُveiled
If you visit the prisoner of the two prisons in a grave
Where asceticism dwells and intelligence lies veiled,
وَأَبصَرتَand you saw أُنسَthe solace of الزُهدِasceticism فيamid وَحشَةِthe desolation of البِلىdecay
وَشاهَدتَand you beheld وَجهَthe face of الشَيخِthe sheikh وَهوَand it is مُنيرُradiant
And see the solace of asceticism amid decay's desolation,
And behold the sheikh's face, radiant,
وَأَيقَنتَand you became certain أَنَّthat الدينَreligion لِلَّهِbelongs to God وَحدَهُHim alone
وَأَنَّand that قُبورَthe graves of الزاهِدينَascetics قُصورُpalaces
And become certain that religion belongs to God alone,
And that the graves of ascetics are palaces,
فَقِفthen stop ثُمَّthen سَلِّمoffer a greeting وَاِحتَشِمand show reverence إِنَّindeed شَيخَناour sheikh
مَهيبٌawe-inspiring عَلىin رَغمِspite of الفَناءِdeath وَقورُdignified
Then stop, then offer a greeting and show reverence: our sheikh
Is awe-inspiring, dignified despite death.
وَسائِلهُand ask him عَمّاabout what غابَwas hidden عَنكَfrom you فَإِنَّهُfor indeed he
عَليمٌdeeply knowledgeable بِأَسرارِabout the secrets of الحَياةِlife بَصيرُdiscerning
And ask him about what is hidden from you, for he
Knows life's secrets well and is discerning.
يُخَبِّرُكَhe tells you الأَعمىthe blind man وَإِنand even if كُنتَyou are مُبصِراًsighted
بِماabout what لَمnot تُخَبِّرhave told أَحرُفٌletters وَسُطورُand lines
The blind man will tell you, though you have sight,
What letters and lines have never told.
كَأَنّيas though I بِسَمعِwith the hearing of الغَيبِthe unseen أَسمَعُI hear كُلَّall ماthat
يُجيبُreplies بِهِwith it أُستاذُناour master وَيُحيرُand bewilders
It is as though, with the hearing of the unseen, I hear all that
Our master offers in answer, leaving one bewildered.
يُناديكَhe calls to you أَهلاًwelcome بِالَّذيto the one who عاشَlived عَيشَناour way of life
وَماتَand died وَلَمand did not يَدرُجcreep إِلَيهِto him غُرورُdelusion
He calls to you, “Welcome to one who lived our life
And died without delusion ever creeping upon him.
قَضَيتَyou spent حَياةًa life مِلؤُهاits fullness البِرُّgoodness وَالتُقىand piety
فَأَنتَso you بِأَجرِof the reward of المُتَّقينَthe God-fearing جَديرُdeserving
You spent a life filled with goodness and piety,
So you deserve the reward of the God-fearing.
وَسَمَّوكَand they called you فيهِمamong them فَيلَسوفاًa philosopher وَأَمسَكواand said no more
وَماand not أَنتَyou إِلّاexcept مُحسِنٌa benefactor وَمُجيرُand a giver of refuge
And among them they called you a philosopher, and said no more,
Yet you are only a benefactor and a giver of refuge.
وَماand not أَنتَyou إِلّاexcept زاهِدٌan ascetic صاحَcried out صَيحَةًa cry
يَرِنُّrings صَداهاits echo ساعَةًfor a while وَيَطيرُand flies away
And you are only an ascetic who uttered a cry
Whose echo rings awhile and flies away.
سَلَوتَyou turned away عَنِfrom الدُنياthe world وَلَكِنَّهُمand yet they صَبَواlonged

You turned away from the world, but they longed
For it, for what it gives them and the sustenance it supplies.
حَياةُthe life of الوَرىhumankind حَربٌwar وَأَنتَand you تُريدُهاyou want it
سَلاماًpeace وَأَسبابُand the causes of الكِفاحِstruggle كَثيرُmany
Human life is war, yet you would have it
Be peace, though the causes of struggle are many.
أَبَتhas refused سُنَّةُthe law of العُمرانِcivilization إِلّاanything but تَناحُراًmutual strife
وَكَدحاًand toil وَلَوand even if أَنَّthat البَقاءَsurvival يَسيرُeasy
The law of civilization allows nothing but mutual strife
And toil, even if survival were easy.
تُحاوِلُyou attempt رَفعَthe removal of الشَرِّevil وَالشَرُّand evil واقِعٌa reality
وَتَطلُبُand you seek مَحضَpure الخَيرِgood وَهوَand it is عَسيرُhard to attain
You try to remove evil, though evil is a reality,
And seek pure good, though it is hard to attain.
وَلَولاand were it not for اِمتِزاجُthe mingling of الشَرِّevil بِالخَيرِwith good لَمnot يَقُمarise
دَليلٌa proof عَلىof أَنَّthat الإِلَهَGod قَديرُall-powerful
And without evil's mingling with good, there would be no
Proof that God is all-powerful.
وَلَمand would not يَبعَثِsend اللَهُGod النَبِيّينَthe prophets لِلهُدىfor guidance
وَلَمand would not يَتَطَلَّعaspire لِلسَريرِto the throne أَميرُa prince
Nor would God have sent the prophets to guide,
Nor would a prince have aspired to the throne.
وَلَمand would not يَعشَقِlove العَلياءَthe heights حُرٌّa free man وَلَمand would not يَسُدlead
كَريمٌa noble man وَلَمand would not يَرجُhope for الثَراءَwealth فَقيرُa poor man
Nor would a free man have loved the heights, nor would leadership have been gained
By a noble man, nor would a poor man have hoped for wealth.
وَلَوand if كانَwere فيناin us الخَيرُgoodness مَحضاًpure لَماthen would not دَعاhave called

إِلىto اللَهِGod داعٍa caller أَوor تَبَلَّجَdawned نورُa light
And had goodness within us been pure, no call would have come
To God from any caller, nor would any light have dawned.

وَلاnor قيلَhave been said هَذاthis عالِمٌa learned man وَخَبيرُand an expert
Nor would it have been said, ‘This is a rightly guided philosopher,’
Nor would it have been said, ‘This is a learned man and an expert.’
فَكَمso how much فيalong طَريقِthe path of الشَرِّevil خَيرٌgood وَنِعمَةٌand blessing
وَكَمand how many فيalong طَريقِthe path of الطَيِّباتِgood things شُرورُevils
How much good and blessing lie along the path of evil,
And how many evils lie along the path of good things!
أَلَمdid you not تَرَyou see أَنّيthat I قُمتُarose قَبلَكَbefore you داعِياًcalling

إِلىto الزُهدِasceticism لاnot يَأويcomes إِلَيَّto me ظَهيرُa supporter
Did you not see that before you I arose, calling
To asceticism, with no supporter coming to my side?
أَطاعواthey obeyed أَبيقوراًEpicurus وَسُقراطَand Socrates قَبلَهُbefore him

وَخولِفتُand I was opposed فيماin what أَرتَئيI deem right وَأُشيرُand I advise
They obeyed Epicurus, and Socrates before him,
And I was opposed in what I deemed right and advised.

And I died, yet no cravings died in one who hungered
For it; nor did any conscience surrender the reins.
إِذاif هُدِمَتare demolished لِلظُلمِfor tyranny دورٌhouses تَشَيَّدَتare erected
لَهُfor it فَوقَabove أَكتافِthe shoulders of الكَواكِبِthe stars دورُhouses
If houses of tyranny are razed, there arise
For it, above the shoulders of the stars, more houses.
أَفاضَspoke at length كِلاناboth of us فيin النَصيحَةِcounsel جاهِداًstriving hard

وَماتَand died كِلاناboth of us وَالقُلوبُand hearts صُخورُrocks
Both of us poured forth counsel, striving hard,
And both of us died, while hearts remained rocks.

How much falsehood was told of the refuge of the poor,
And how many lies were told of the Sheikh of Ma‘arra!

And no messenger's words ever deterred anyone from doing harm,
And no warner ever alarmed one bewitched by life.”
