قالَتِ الجَوزاءُ حينَ رَأَت
جَفنَهُhis eyelid قَدhad واصَلَkept up السَهَراthe sleepless vigil
جَفنَهُ قَد واصَلَ السَهَرا
Gemini said, when she saw
The walnut tree said when she saw
his eyelid had kept up its sleepless vigil:
His eyelids, sleep deprived,
ماwhat لِهَذاwith this الصَبِّardent lover فيin وَلَهٍlovesick yearning
ما لِهَذا الصَبِّ في وَلَهٍ
أَتُراهُdo you think he يَعشَقُloves passionately القَمَراthe moon
أَتُراهُ يَعشَقُ القَمَرا
“What ails this ardent lover in his yearning?
Why is this youth so distraught
Could he be in love with the moon?”
Is it the moon he desires?
