أَخيmy brother وَاللَهِby God قَدalready مُلِئَhas been filled الوِطابُthe milk-skins
وَداخَلَنيand crept into me بِصُحبَتِكَabout your friendship اِرتِيابُdoubt
My brother, by God, the milk-skins are full;
My brother, by God the ditches have been filled
And doubt about your friendship has crept into me.
And keeping company with you brings me doubt
رَجَوتُكَI entreated you مَرَّةًonce وَعَتَبتُand I reproached أُخرىanother time
فَلاso neither أَجدىavailed الرَجاءُentreaty وَلاnor العِتابُreproach
I entreated you once, and reproached you another time;
Once I hoped in you and another time blamed
But neither entreaty nor reproach availed.
But neither hope nor blame avails
نَبَذتَyou cast aside مَوَدَّتيmy affection فَاِهنَأso be content بِبُعديwith my absence
فَآخِرُso the last عَهدِناour contact هَذاthis الكِتابُthe letter
You cast aside my affection, so enjoy my absence;
You have cast off my affection so congratulations on my distance
So this letter is our final contact.
For this is the last of our bonds
