    I fear my teacher when

Day dawns, and I am frightened.

And I remain among my companions,

    Awaiting her punishment.

Tears do not intercede for me, nor

    Does prolonged pleading help.

And I fear my mother when

Darkness falls, and I am distraught.

And I spend the night awaiting punish-

-ment, and my eyes do not sleep.

What harm would it have done me had I lis-

-tened to what was said and obeyed?

What harm would it have done me had I preserved my clo-

-thes, so they would not tear,

And kept my papers in my sat-

-chel, so they would not be scattered?

Then I would live secure and flour-

-ish in happiness and revel freely.
