Between eyelid and slumber has arisen

a barrier that, had you wished, would not exist.

Here I am, while the days toss me

    between longing and infatuation.

I have a heart for you, unrecognized

by my ribs, so great is its weakness.

And a sigh that, if you knew of it,

you would think the Persians' fire was in my body.

    O my people! I am a man

bewildered by my affairs and my times.

Is it estrangement and misery that I lament?

Truly, this is the height of affliction.

O noble hero, who in this age possesses

    an ambition beyond the grasp of keen minds;

and O youth, whose thought, were it to dwell

in the nights of time, would keep them from betraying.

O Emir of the Pilgrimage, you are its

best protector and most trusted guardian.

The Sacred House stirred you with longing for it,

as one yearning for his homeland is stirred.

The land of the Hijaz rejoiced in you,

as it rejoices in abundant, unceasing rain.

And glad tidings of your arrival spread among them,

    from Egypt to Aden.
