Circle the corners of this grave and touch them reverently,
Circle around this grave and bid farewell,
And discharge there what duty demands.
And fulfill there what obligations you still owe.

Here lies a heart—exalted is God, its Creator—
Whose hopes exceeded what fates and resolves could allow.
Whose hopes outstripped both destiny and resolve.
Like dawn in the east, awakening all nations anew.
هُناhere فَمٌa mouth وَبَنانٌand fingers لاحَshone بَينَهُماbetween them

Here are a mouth and fingers; between them shone
Seeds, from which morals and wisdom grew.
In the East a dawn whose light the nations hail.
Built for the seeker of truth a pillar which cannot be demolished.
هُناhere فَمٌa mouth وَبَنانٌand fingers طالَماso often نَثَراthey both scattered

Here are a mouth and fingers that so often poured forth
The zealous guardian, here the noble known to nations.
Prose through which proverbs and maxims spread.
Oh you who sleeps serenely in his resting place,
هُناhere الكَمِيُّthe armored warrior الَّذيwhose شادَتbuilt عَزائِمُهُhis resolve

Here lies the armored warrior whose resolve built
Slumber softly, without care or illness.
For the seeker of truth a pillar that cannot fall.
The pulpits still ask after you in every tribulation,
هُناhere الشَهيدُthe martyr هُناhere رَبُّlord of اللِواءِthe banner هُناhere

Here lies the martyr, here the lord of the banner, here
As do the papers, pens and ink.
The defender of honor; here the gallant man they knew.
You left a void within us none can fill

O sleeper, content in his resting place,
Except a passionate heart, forever lit with ember.
May sleep be sweet to you, without care or sickness.
Sleepless, striving toward his goal,
باتَتhave kept تُسائِلُناquestioning us فيin كُلِّevery نازِلَةٍcalamity

At every calamity they have kept asking us
His marks are universal, his hopes high as skyscrapers.
About you—the pulpits, the paper, and the pen.
My heart tells me truly, and cannot lie,
تَرَكتَyou left فيناamong us فَراغاًa void لَيسَnot يَشغَلُهُfills it
إِلّاexcept أَبِيٌّproud-spirited ذَكِيُّkeen القَلبِof heart مُضطَرِمُaflame
You left among us a void that none can fill
I see a spirit circled by glory and grandeur.
Except a proud, keen-hearted man, aflame,
I see majesty, I see light, I see an angel,
مُنَفَّرُbereft of النَومِsleep سَبّاقٌracing ahead لِغايَتِهِtoward his goal

Bereft of sleep, racing ahead toward his goal,
I see the living one who revives and smiles upon us.
His achievements far-reaching, his hopes within reach.
God is great! This face I recognize -
إِنّيindeed I أَرىI see وَفُؤاديand my heart لَيسَnot يَكذِبُنيdeceives me
روحاًa spirit يَحُفُّsurrounds بِهاaround it الإِكبارُreverence وَالعِظَمُand greatness
I see—and my heart does not deceive me—
This pride of the Nile, this singular flag.
A spirit surrounded by reverence and greatness.
Bow your eyes, and greet him in your hearts
أَرىI see جَلالاًmajesty أَرىI see نوراًlight أَرىI see مَلَكاًan angel
أَرىI see مُحَيّاًa face يُحَيّيناgreets us وَيَبتَسِمُand smiles
I see majesty, I see light, I see an angel;
When words fail to do justice.
I see a face that greets us and smiles.
And vow to defend his principles,
اللَهُGod أَكبَرُis greatest هَذاthis الوَجهُface أَعرِفُهُI recognize it
هَذاthis فَتىthe youth of النيلِthe Nile هَذاthis المُفرَدُthe peerless one العَلَمُthe luminary
God is greatest! I recognize this face:
For we stand in a position where oaths are sweet.
This is the youth of the Nile, this peerless luminary.
We, your loyal ones, whom you roused
غُضّواlower العُيونَthe eyes وَحَيّوهُand greet him تَحِيَّتَهُhis due greeting
مِنَfrom القُلوبِthe hearts إِذاif لَمnot تُسعِدِhelp الكَلِمُthe words
Lower your eyes and give him his due greeting,
When you lived, and when the abyss claimed you.
From your hearts, if words fail you.
We come to settle accounts over our stances,
وَأَقسِمواand swear أَنto تَذودواward off عَنfrom مَبادِئِهِhis principles
فَنَحنُfor we فيin مَوقِفٍa place يَحلوis sweet بِهِin it القَسَمُthe oath
And swear to defend his principles,
To draw from you, prepare, and submit to judgment.
For we stand in a place where an oath is sweet.
They told us to be silent, so we were, but then
لَبَّيكَat your call نَحنُwe الأُلىthose who حَرَّكتَyou stirred أَنفُسَهُمtheir souls
لَمّاwhen سَكَنتَyou grew still وَلَمّاand when غالَكَcarried you off العَدَمُnothingness
At your call! We are those whose souls you stirred
The arrogance of the unkind made our pain speak out.
When you grew still, and when nothingness carried you off.
We were accused when we sought glory -
جِئناwe came نُؤَدّيgive حِساباًan account عَنof مَواقِفِناour stands
وَنَستَمِدُّand seek aid وَنَستَعديand seek redress وَنَحتَكِمُand submit to judgment
We have come to account for the stands we have taken,
For the weak are suspected in both cases.
And to seek aid, seek redress, and submit to judgment.
They said we had wronged ourselves, but God knows
قيلَit was said اِسكُتواbe silent فَسَكَتناso we fell silent ثُمَّthen أَنطَقَناmade us speak
عَسفُoppression of الجُفاةِthe callous وَأَعلىand raised صَوتَناour voice الأَلَمُpain
We were told, 'Be silent'; we fell silent, then were made to speak
The oppressors are they.
By the tyranny of the callous, and pain raised our voice.
When silent, they gossip - such is their way,
قَدِindeed اِتُّهِمناwe were accused وَلَمّاand not yet نَطَّلِبwe seek جَلَلاًanything great
إِنَّindeed الضَعيفَthe weak عَلىin الحالَينِboth cases مُتَّهَمُaccused
We were accused, though we had yet to demand anything great;
When we speak, they cry chaos and turmoil.
The weak are accused in either case.
What do they want? Their eyes know no rest!
قالواthey said لَقَدindeed ظَلَمواthey wronged بِالحَقِّthrough justice أَنفُسَهُمthemselves
وَاللَهُand God يَعلَمُknows أَنَّthat الظالِمينَthe wrongdoers هُمُthey themselves
They said, 'By seeking justice, they have indeed wronged themselves';
Gentleness cannot be hidden 'neath a banner.
And God knows that they are the wrongdoers.
How many nations desired it, but it took
إِذاif سَكَتناwe fell silent تَناجَواthey whispered together تِلكَthat عادَتُهُمtheir habit
وَإِنand if نَطَقناwe spoke تَنادَواthey called out فِتنَةٌsedition عَمَمُwidespread
If we are silent, they whisper together—that is their habit;
No firm foothold around them in their lands!
And if we speak, they call out, 'Widespread sedition!'
Your Lord was not one to abandon it -
قَدindeed مَرَّpassed عامٌa year بِناover us وَالأَمرُand trouble يَحزُبُناbesets us
آناًat one time وَآوِنَةًand at other times تَنتابُناbefall us النِقَمُafflictions
A year has passed over us, with trouble besetting us
It clung to Him with ropes of His twisting.
At times, and at others afflictions descend upon us.
Until the dusk falls and nations bear witness!
فَالناسُso the people فيin شِدَّةٍdistress وَالدَهرُand the age فيin كَلَبٍfury
وَالعَيشُand livelihood قَدindeed حارَbecame bewildered فيهِby it الحاذِقُthe skilled الفَهِمُthe discerning
The people are in distress, and the age is raging,
The Nile will know we are the best to flow through it,
And even the skilled and discerning are baffled by earning a living.
And that pyramid gape in amazement at us!
وَلِلسِياسَةِand for politics فيناamong us كُلَّevery آوِنَةٍtime
لَونٌa color جَديدٌnew وَعَهدٌand a pledge لَيسَnot يُحتَرَمُis honored
And politics among us takes, at every turn,
These saplings you tended at the place they grew
A new color, and a pledge that is not honored.
With the best of what rain and spring breeze could allow.
بَيناwhile نَرىwe see جَمرَهاits live coal تُخشىis feared مَلامِسُهُits touch

While we see its live coal, whose touch is feared,
Morning and night the eyes of God watched over them,
Suddenly it is charcoal when one seeking warmth touches it.
Until they blossomed and glory crowned them.
تُصغيit listens لِأَصواتِناto our voices طَوراًsometimes لِتَخدَعَناto deceive us
وَتارَةًand at times يَزدَهيهاmake it haughty الكِبرُarrogance وَالصَمَمُand deafness
Sometimes it listens to our voices to deceive us,
So look upon them, grown now and towering,
And at others arrogance and deafness make it haughty.
Exult in them, despite the envier's bitterness!
فَمِنso from مُلايَنَةٍgentleness أَستارُهاits veils خُدَعٌdeceptions

إِلىto مُصالَبَةٍharshness أَستارُهاits veils وَهَمُillusion
So, from gentleness whose veils are tricks
O youths! Follow in his example,
To harshness whose veils are illusion.
Press on, whether enemies approve or resent!
ماذاwhat يُريدونَdo they want لاmay not قَرَّتfind comfort عُيونُهُمُtheir eyes

إِنَّindeed الكِنانَةَal-Kinanah (Egypt) لاnot يُطوىis furled لَهاfor her عَلَمُa banner
What do they want? May their eyes find no comfort!
Each of you is chosen if you walk his path,
Indeed, al-Kinanah's banner shall never be furled.
Each perfect if you endure weariness as he did.
كَمhow many أُمَّةٍa nation رَغِبَتlonged فيهاfor her فَماyet never رَسَخَتtook firm root

How many a nation coveted her, yet never gained
He was never downcast, confronted adversity smiling -
A firm foothold in her land, despite its might.
Press onward, enemies' satisfaction or anger regardless!
ماnot كانَwould be رَبُّكَyour Lord رَبُّLord of البَيتِthe House تارِكَهاabandoning her

وَهيَand she الَّتيwho بِحِبالٍto ropes مِنهُfrom Him تَعتَصِمُholds fast for protection
Your Lord, the Lord of the House, would never abandon her,
O grave! Thirst drew us here -
For she is the one who holds fast to ropes from Him.
So be generous, moisten our souls with reply!
لَبَّيكَat your call إِنّاindeed we عَلىupon ماwhat كُنتَyou used to تَعهَدُهُknow it
حَتّىuntil نَسودَwe rule وَحَتّىand until تَشهَدَbear witness الأُمَمُthe nations
At your call! We remain as you knew us,
Where is the youth whose freshness you hoarded?
Until we are sovereign, and until the nations bear witness,
Where is the ideal the Merciful Lord granted you?
فَيَعلَمَso may know النيلُthe Nile أَنّاthat we خَيرُthe best مَنof those who وَرَدواcame to the water

وَيَستَطيلَand may tower اِختِيالاًin pride ذَلِكَthat الهَرَمُpyramid
So the Nile may know we are the best of those who sought its waters,
What did you do with hopes of ours that wilted?
And that pyramid may tower in pride.
O grave, time effaced their image, tell us!
هَذاthis الغِراسُthe planting الَّذيwhich والَيتَyou tended continually مَنبِتَهُits seedbed

بِخَيرِwith the best of ماwhat والَتِtended الأَضواءُthe light وَالنَسَمُand the breezes
This is the planting whose seedbed you tended
Why this silence, though we call out for water
With the best that light and breezes could bestow.
To ease our inner thirst? Graves cannot speak!
أَمسىreached evening وَأَضحىand reached morning وَعَينُand the eye of اللَهِGod تَحرُسُهُguards it

حَتّىuntil نَماit grew وَحَلاهُand adorned it المَجدُglory وَالشَمَمُand noble pride
Through evening and morning, God's eye guarded it,
Sleep, you've suffered enough fatigue,
Until it grew, and glory and noble pride adorned it.
While we remain wakeful, band bound together.
فَاُنظُرso look إِلَيهِat it وَقَدand already طالَتgrew tall بَواسِقُهُits lofty trees

So look at it, now that its lofty trees have grown tall;
His banner yet waves, shading us,
You will rejoice in it; dust upon the envious man's nose!
His form imprinted still on our hearts.

O rising generation, follow his path,
And persevere, whether the enemies approve or resent it.

For each of you is a Mustafa—chosen—if he follows his example,
And each of you a Kamil—complete—if weariness passes him by.

He met calamity smiling and plunged into it.

So grant us an answer; may steady rains water you.

Where are the virtues—may God guard you—and the noble traits?

Why do graves fall silent when called?
