O men of the New World, stretch out

your arms to the men of the Old World.

And pour upon them from your hands

    sciences, wisdom, and invention.

Each day you have wondrous achievements,

which you bring forth one after another.

How often you have captivated our minds with marvels,

and commanded your age, and it obeyed!

And you sowed in our land and planted,

so we saw what delights the farmers.

And we glimpsed some of your light upon the brow

    of today's celebration—a gleam and a ray.

And we witnessed a trace of your bounty in it,

    delighting the eyes and ears.

If only we could follow your example or keep pace

with you; perhaps we might regain what was lost.

Indeed, but for our failure to stand together, there would be heroes among us

whenever they took up the pen.

And minds that, had torpor not overtaken

them, would have overflowed with novelty and invention.

And advocates of good who, if others did them justice,

would fill the East with dignity and unassailable strength.

O discoverer of electricity, if only you would concern yourself

with an invention that tames our dispositions:

a machine that crushes idle reliance on others in the East

and strips hypocrisy of its mask.

We have grown weary of standing there, weeping

for vanished ancestral honor and squandered glory.

And we have tired of their saying: "Zayd was

a genius, and Amr was brave."

Would that I knew when Egypt would contend

with others for glory in life, in earnest,

and we would see her boast before others of the living,

with pride proclaimed throughout East and West.

O land of Columbus, which of your two crops is higher

in value among humankind, and more lasting in benefit?

Is it men, through whom you gained the heights of glory,

or gold, through which you gained possession of lands?

May rain, fertility, and security never pass you by,

and may you ever remain a dwelling place for peace.

Survey the world and see what has befallen it:

indeed, the pillar of peace within it has collapsed.
