I weep, and the eye of the East weeps with me,

    For the discerning, brilliant writer.

Reluctant tears flowed for his sake,

And outdid the willing tears in generosity.

A loss to the East and to its pride

Is the loss of that inimitable, creative reed pen.

Egypt has, among her men of distinction,

No good fortune—nor has Syria with a splendid man.

So let every understanding heart weep for him.

Fashion them from tears to announce his death.

And lived filling the eye and ear.

Humility was his; arrogance is the habit of a man

Devoid of merit and therefore of no use.

The humility of learning has a majesty

Before which the pretender's arrogance crumbles.

And the robe of merit bears an insignia

More splendid than the two swords and the cannon.

Yet he was never sated with learning.

Racing the dawn to the place of sunrise.

    Illnesses had ravaged his ribs,

While his head was busy, heedless of his ribs.

He died with a sharp sword in his fingers,

That never glanced off its mark when striking.

It accompanied him for fifty years, and never

Broke a pledge to him or deceived him.

    Successful wherever it ran, inspired,

It never missed the watering place when coming to drink.

No one sharpened it save its master,

And no ignorant man or pretender possessed it.

In translation and authorship, it surpassed

The reach of Ibn Bahr and the reach of al-Asma‘i.

What path to guidance did it not take,

And which of its doors did it not knock upon?

It plucks the flowers and selects them,

Like bees, passing over none of the ripest blooms.

So you would think the readers were in a paradise,

Their minds grazing in its meadow.

Sarruf, do not go far, for you are not one

Whom the enfolder of that resting place can fold away.

    Death silenced you, but it

Did not silence your works in the assembly.

    Your memory remains unbroken

In the institute of learning and in the factory.
