جِرابُsack حَظِّيَmy fortune قَدalready أَفرَغتُهُI emptied it طَمَعاًin hope
جِرابُ حَظِّيَ قَد أَفرَغتُهُ طَمَعاً
بِبابِat the door of أُستاذِناour master الشيميal-Shimi وَلاand no عَجَباwonder
بِبابِ أُستاذِنا الشيمي وَلا عَجَبا
I emptied the sack of my fortune in hope
I emptied my fate's purse in greedy hope
At the door of our master al-Shimi—and no wonder.
At our teacher Al-Shimmy's door, no wonder!
فَعادَthen it returned ليto me وَهوَand it was مَملوءٌfull فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto it
فَعادَ لي وَهوَ مَملوءٌ فَقُلتُ لَهُ
مِمّاwith what? فَقالَthen it said مِنَof الحَسراتِthe regrets واحَرَباalas!
مِمّا فَقالَ مِنَ الحَسراتِ واحَرَبا
Then it returned to me full, so I said to it:
It returned to me full, so I said to it:
“With what?” Then it said, “With regrets—alas!”
"From the regrets and sorrows he uttered."
