تَعَجَّبُmarvels حُبّيmy beloved مِنat أَسيرٍa captive مُكَبَّلٍfettered
تَعَجَّبُ حُبّي مِن أَسيرٍ مُكَبَّلٍ
صَليبِstout العَصاthe staff باقٍremaining عَلىin الرَسَفانِshuffling in chains
صَليبِ العَصا باقٍ عَلى الرَسَفانِ
My beloved marvels at a fettered captive,
My love's surprise at a chained captive
My love wonders at a prisoner bound in shackles,
stout of staff, still shuffling in chains.
The cross of his walking stick remains on the coffin
Strong of resolve, enduring the shuffling gait.
فَلاso do not تَعجَبيmarvel مِنّيat me حَليلَةَwife of مالِكٍMalik
فَلا تَعجَبي مِنّي حَليلَةَ مالِكٍ
كَذَلِكَthus يأَتيcomes الدَهرُtime بِالحَدَثانِwith calamities
كَذَلِكَ يأَتي الدَهرُ بِالحَدَثانِ
So do not marvel at me, Malik’s wife;
So wonder not at me, forlorn of my dear
So do not wonder at me, O wife of Malik,
thus does time bring calamities.
For time brings constant change
For thus does Time bring about its tribulations.
