Dhu al-Ghada has faded, bereft of Umm Amr, and lies deserted.

Decay has changed it since I left, and it is altered.

It was given inhabitants other than her, and she exchanged it

for another desert encampment and settled abode,

moving to Asar; then their separation continued

through a harsh turn of fate that passed beyond your own will.

The clan's gathering, before they dispersed,

was brief, and dispersal suited them better.

Rather, the visitor returning after a long journey

and prolonged praise stirred longing and brought memories:

a phantom of Umm Amr that traveled by night, though between us lay

wastes that destroy even a spirited, well-trained mount.

It came by night, while the last stars seemed

like trailing white camels heading toward water sunk deep.

I said to her, 'Return, for youthful folly has passed us by,

and the prime of youth has announced its departure and turned away.

Troubles have come between us since you last knew me,

and enmity turned me from amusement, bringing it to an end.

Affairs, sons, and shifting fortune have turned

us over—belly and back—O Umm Amr.

We were struck by what, had it struck Radwa,

would have leveled whatever was rugged in its flanks.

How many a secure man it has found, now afraid,

and a man of acknowledged prosperity, changed beyond recognition!

Through the loss of a radiant man, by whose face the clouds are asked for rain:

when he was chosen, they said, 'His chooser had no regrets.'

A refuge for orphans, whose touch heals wounds,

    and a noble man who refused dishonor when subjected to it;

patient under the hardships a young man must bear,

    and intensely bitter when bitterness was called for;

one of those who raise their ambition toward renown and eminence,

    when none but the noble rises to win remembrance;

and lush with bounty, when seekers told one another

where remnants of goodness lay, to follow their traces.

    وَلَو كانَ مِن حَيٍّ سِوانا لأعثَرا

    We were bereaved, yet did not stumble at the blow his loss dealt us;

had he belonged to a clan other than ours, his loss would have made them stumble.

Our lot was not to escape being struck

by a heavy burden; we were bereaved so that we might endure.

He passed away with his attendants among us; none could find

a reprieve to ward off the decrees of death.

As though he had never been one of us, and we had never sought his help

against the calamities of time—nothing but remembrance.

And we, despite death's pressure on our spear-shaft,

by your grandfather, guard its tip against being bent,

with a root-stock in a hollow, fenced off from

the torrents of foes, for fear it might rage like a leopard.

We defy reproach, for whenever our people speak

of our ancestral honors, they offer richly embellished praise.

And when people's chiefs come forward,

we bring a radiant chief who towers over them all.

You see every chief keeping clear of him in fear,

as non-Arabs fear the mighty one adorned with bracelets.

And many a difficult problem, for which a resolver is summoned,

whose mention becomes a source of glory and pride,

I repelled, though the men had been unable to repel it,

and the people's spokesman became afraid of me.

We grasped it with our own hands, and its grievous burden became

light; and an ally whose call we answered to give aid—

without any favor from him, and without an oppressor's wrongdoing—

we gave him staunch support when he stood forth.

If we escape the terrors our people feared

for us, then God makes easy whatever He wills.

But if time destroys us, it has destroyed before us

the kings of Banu Nasr, Kisra, and Caesar,

and our fathers—we are nothing but their sons.

We shall meet what they met: an allotted death.

And many an ugly remark spoken by a kinsman

I pretended not to hear, though he offended and spoke obscenely,

to honor the clan, out of protective pride and to cultivate goodwill

against a future reversal, if our fortune turns hostile again.

And a malicious gossip who faulted me to injure me—

his reach fell short of mine, so he desisted.

My generosity belied the fault-finders' blame,

and so did my patience when trouble bit hard and brought distress.

And when death is so close that not even

a handspan remains, I guard my pride against retreat.

And many a task, like a naked sword blade, I have tackled,

when the affair left no clear path from its entrance to an exit.

If time has assailed me and struck me

with misfortune—for calamities do not merely graze a people—

I am not bowed in sorrow by its blows,

nor distraught if the turn of fortune changes.

The days have preserved in me a fierce sense of honor,

despite most of what I endured, and a renowned name.

I am not a coward when adversity visits,

nor brittle if time turns hostile.
