وَلَمّاand when دَخَلتُI entered السِجنَthe prison ياO أُمِّmother of مالِكٍMalik
وَلَمّا دَخَلتُ السِجنَ يا أُمِّ مالِكٍ
ذَكَرتُكِI remembered you والأَطرافُand the limbs فيin حَلَقٍrings سُمرِdark
ذَكَرتُكِ والأَطرافُ في حَلَقٍ سُمرِ
And when I entered prison, O Umm Malik,
When I entered the prison, O mother of Malik
I remembered you, with my limbs in dark rings.
I remembered you, while the shackles encircled my neck
وَعِندَand in the presence of سَعيدٍSaʿid غَيرَexcept أَنthat لَمdid not أُبَحI speak openly بِهِof it
وَعِندَ سَعيدٍ غَيرَ أَن لَم أُبَح بِهِ
ذَكَرتُكِI remembered you إِنَّindeed الأَمرَthe matter يُذكَرُis recalled بالأَمرِby the matter
ذَكَرتُكِ إِنَّ الأَمرَ يُذكَرُ بالأَمرِ
And in Saʿid’s presence, though I did not reveal it,
And with Sa'eed, though I did not confess it to him
I remembered you: one thing calls another to mind.
I remembered you, truly a thing is recalled by its like
