    نغتنم من هوا الصبابة نفحا

    Rise with us at dawn, O brother of affection;

    let us catch a waft from the breeze of yearning,

    in gardens whose messenger is the breeze,

    among people who considered mirth a gain.

    And the sweet-voiced nightingale sang; whenever

    our heart drank again of sorrow, it grew sober.

    Do not ask for an account explaining my passion

    and my lovesickness, for words fall short of explaining them.

    O ruins that stir the fire of passion,

    and make tears trickle from me, drop by drop,

    sing me Mary's praises, in hope that I may

    find forgiveness in her spacious sanctuary.

    Ah, may God protect a valley that, through love of her,

    grew holier, its soil and slope becoming sweet.

    So its gardens and its hills offer us

    pleasant outings, where we dwell in a palace.

    O heart that melts, tender as it is,

    my liver is wounded by love for loved ones.

    The hour of a visit is but a boon

    from a beloved who teases you with a promise.

    What harm to me if toil overtakes me,

    and my beloved adds further labor to that toil?

    Indeed, my heart adorns Mary with love,

    and passion adorns my love with praise.

    Indeed, Mary, in loving you I have a heart

    love-struck, and accepting no advice,

    and a heart that melts with passion for you,

    and eyes that pour out tears again and again.

    عاد شوقي بها أصح وأصحى

    May my father, then I myself, be ransom for a pure maiden;

    through her, my longing has become sounder and more sober.

    Spare me talk of Hind and Lubna,

    and Sulayma and Zaynab, and step aside.

    And repeat to me the tale of the daughter of a leader,

    a prophetic one; you will find the tale truer.

    She is a virgin, and in virginity a mother.

    O leader of guides, give me further explanation.

    ما وجدنا من قبل مريم صلحا

    She is truly the reconciliation of heaven and earth;

    before Mary, we found no reconciliation.

    وهي شمسٌ تريكمُ الليل صبحا

    And she is the whole; within her, creation is a part;

    and she is a sun that shows you night as dawn.

    O heaven whom God praises ever more,

    and humankind repeats your praise in prayers of glorification,

    فلهذا استحال مدحي مدحا

    so regard me, in your presence, as a garden's nightingale;

    for this reason, my praise has turned into praise.
