Is Bishr to be blamed for passion, being a youth,

when he stands fully armed with youthful vigor?

How many like him, when they went to extremes in passion,

fell in ignorance from the air’s lofty heights!

Whoever resembles an ass’s foal in his pursuits

knows not what will come after his passing,

at a station where souls stand upon a brink,

and people suffer misery and the loss of hope.

One day he returns, torn apart beneath the soil,

and his wealth has become the worst of riches.

He becomes decayed remains, oozing beneath the rock.

O son of affection, where is pure serenity?

He has lost the radiance that was once his,

and now has neither light nor glory.

    لا تطمعنْ بسلامةٍ وبَراء

    You are dust, and therefore return to dust;

do not hope for safety and immunity.

How much better had you fed on fresh herbage,

an ascetic, living alone in solitude!

How much better had you hearkened to the call,

    giving ear, and answering swiftly!

The world in its deceit is like dropsy:

it snares a reckless mind with a waterskin.

In it a man veils himself in blindness,

and blindness of insight resembles a dense cloud.

So rise, repent, and clear your eye with eye-salve,

if you fear the Judge and a day of departure.

And accept the lowliest worldly fare—nightshade for food,

for every delight is destined for extinction.

Whoever is content with the humblest mixed fare

finds his wishes among the sky’s bright stars.

So flee the blaze to the mighty Lord,

if you are endowed with keen intelligence.

For the master scholar finds the broad earth too narrow,

longing for Him in whom all abundance lies.

So turn in longing to your Lord and gain His bounty,

for through His bounty the soul becomes rich.

If your mind is barren as a wasteland,

you end up with judgment like a hollow rāʾ-tree husk.

How many a fool has swayed with the east wind,

obeying in this the first surge of youthful passion!

    لو شاءَ كان موازناً بكَراءِ

    He traded vigilance and caution for sleep;

had he wished, he could have matched Mount Karāʾ.

Restless as goats afflicted with abā-sickness,

    crushed and shattered like reeds.

O wanderer, lost amid the broad, winding dunes,

whose wealth is shakier than a fluttering banner!

How often a youth has strayed through love of wealth,

through the twin distractions of boasting and beautiful song.

So cast off sloth and rouse yourself: the hours

pass in vain, for life is a vessel’s seepage.

Do not look to men’s beards:

how many a beard is filled with wrangling!

    فالسيفُ لم يسبُقهُ عَدوُ عِداءِ

    The snares of enemies have surrounded your courtyard;

for no racing stride has ever outstripped the sword.

So leave dwellings and buildings—may I be your ransom—

and abandon refinement in structures and construction.

    ثم الكِباء دُخان غيرِ كِباءِ

    And leave adorned sweepings to the people of sweepings;

then incense is smoke from something other than incense.

And have you not seen water in the shade of abundance,

where a stout well-rope is needed?

O you who leave the pools’ water with your thirst quenched,

is your water now not water from pools?

Repent, weep, lament, confess: you will erase from that parchment

a sin that overtook you at the sight of Ibn Saḥāʾ.
