A lamenting tongue speaks to my mind:

If you are a mourner, then you are righteous.

No lightning of mourning flashes but there come

clouds of tears, clasping hands with the lightning.

So it and my tears seem like a bird,

roaming from the lid of my eye, or departing.

So its tears are like baptism, and I

am purified by its baptism and reconciled.

So humility accords with my mourning, just as

my laughter opposes it; that is plain.

Hell, then, is the foremost cause of mourning,

as fire is kindled by a spark-striking flint.

Whoever makes mourning his constant habit

mourns of his own accord in every quarter.

    فاصدح لأنك نحو دمعي صاح

    O nightingale of thought, take my tears;

so sing out, for you are alert to my tears.

Whoever remembers the Judge slays his sorrow

with mourning’s sword, and hope is the slayer.

Whoever does not mourn in God—his mourning strays

into despair; despair is a shameful evil.

O conceited one, desist from deceptive mourning.

How can you mourn while the flint of your evil strikes sparks?

    ذا سابحٌ يوماً وذلك رامح

    There is no mourning at all where the flesh finds ease;

this one swims one day, and that one wields a spear.

O monk, mourn; you have heard that

there is no feast for monks; you are departing.

And when you have withdrawn from sins, withdraw

from your grief-stirring mourning, and triumph, O wanderer.

Be certain: sighs alone are the finest tears

when serving in place of tears; you are departing.

    بل دمعة الصوّام غيثٌ صالح

    If you weep while sated, that is error;

rather, the frequent faster’s tear is beneficent rain.

    Blessed John Climacus has uttered

a saying upheld by evident righteousness:

The Judge asks no miracle of us,

but asks for the mourning that I praise.
