Woman is but a man's allotted share,

And a partner, a companion, and a beloved.

    Life is pleasant only with her;

No life without a companion is pleasant.

And if ever she makes a man's life miserable,

She does not persist, for she is both ailment and healer.

No one ever prompted her to cause misery except

A man who is a stranger to women's company.

And if ever pearls are strung around

A mule's neck, they appear in a dismal hue.

And likewise the lily, if brought near

A he-goat's nose, takes on an offensive scent.

    Thus every delicate thing loses

Its delicacy among the coarse and the flawed.

So know this, O scholars, O poets,

O people of every kind, O every man of letters.
