إذاwhen حكمrules الخطاerror قتلis slain الصوابwhat is right
فلاthen no شرعlaw هناكthere ولاnor كتابscripture
When error rules, what is right is slain.
If ignorance rules, truth is killed,
Then there is no law there, nor any scripture.
No law or scripture then upheld.
وأعلمand the most learned ذاthis الملاthe gathering يعنوbows down ويدنوand draws near
وأجهلهمand their most ignorant يسودrules ويستهابand is feared
And the most learned of this gathering bows and draws near,
I know the ignoramus draws near, bold and rude,
While their most ignorant rules and is feared.
While the wise remain obscure and subdued.
فلاso no عجبwonder إذاif ماemphatic particle السحبthe clouds هارتcollapsed
ولاnor بدعanything strange إذاif شيدis built up الضبابthe fog
So no wonder if the clouds collapse,
No wonder if clouds burst and waters poured,
Nor is it strange if the fog is built up.
Or fog should rise and vision blurred.
وللحصباءand for the pebbles فيin البطحاءthe valley floor ريّsatiation with water
وفيand in العلياءthe heights للشهبfor the meteors التهابblazing
And the pebbles on the valley floor are sated with water,
Pebbles in plains can make rain,
And in the heights the meteors blaze.
As meteors in high heavens burn and flame.
وإنand if تكُنِare الحصىthe pebbles للوطءfor treading underfoot عدتallotted
وللجليانand for illumination قدindeed عدّwas allotted الشهابthe meteor
And if the pebbles are allotted to be trodden underfoot,
If you think mere rocks rain can evoke,
And the meteor has been allotted to give light,
Meteors for the brave are bespoke.
فَماthen nothing للجاهلينَfor the ignorant سِوىexcept اِفتِقارpoverty
ولوand even if تبراgold لهمfor them عادbecame الترابthe dust
Then the ignorant have nothing but poverty,
The ignorant can do naught but want,
Even if the dust turns to gold for them.
Even if for them heaven did grant.
وماand nothing لذويfor those endowed with النهىreason إلاexcept ارتواءquenching of thirst
ولوand even if أجرىmade flow اللظىthe flames لهمfor them السحابthe clouds
And those endowed with reason know only quenched thirst,
The wise only wish to drink their fill,
Even if the clouds pour out flames for them.
Even if lightning clouds their valleys fill.
فماso what نفعuse الجهولthe ignorant man غداةat the time of خطبa calamity
وأينand where نراهwe see him إنif جدbecame earnest الطلابthe quest
So what use is the ignorant man in a time of calamity?
Of what use is the fool when fate frowns?
And where do we see him if the quest grows earnest?
Where can we find him if need surrounds?
وليسand not يروقهpleases him إلاexcept الخرابruin
When he gains wealth, he becomes vile,
Wealth makes him mean, ruin he adores,
And nothing pleases him but ruin.
He likes collapsed buildings, broken doors.
يجدstrives وراءafter كلevery رديruin وشرand evil
وينصبand toils كلماwhenever خفضتwere lowered رقابnecks
He strives after all ruin and evil,
Behind evil and harm he lurks,
And he toils whenever necks are bowed.
The necks bow before him as he irks.
قبيحvile فالجهولso the ignorant man إذنthen مصابafflicted
For ignorance engenders every disposition
Ignorance breeds ugly dispositions,
That is vile; thus the ignorant man is afflicted.
So fools are prone to transgressions.
وإنand if أعطىgrants السيادةsovereignty وفقthe favor of دهرtime
بغىhe tyrannizes ولبغيِهand because of his tyranny شابturned gray الغرابthe raven
And if time's favor grants him sovereignty,
If fate gives dominance despite all,
He tyrannizes, and his tyranny turns the raven gray.
He tyrannizes, to him ravens call.
فتنحبso wail يومon the day of موتتهhis death المعاصيsins
وتنبحand bark يومon the day of مولدهhis birth الكلابthe dogs
So sins wail on the day of his death,
When he dies, sins howl and scream,
And dogs bark on the day of his birth.
At his birth, dogs snarl and blaspheme.
فيحياso he lives آثماًas a sinner ويموتand dies كفراin unbelief
وينشرand is resurrected كيso that يداهيهmay assail him العقابpunishment
So he lives as a sinner and dies in unbelief,
He lives in sins and dies denying,
And is resurrected so that punishment may assail him.
So he can be chastised in his dying.
