يا شرق أبا الهدى ترى أين هداك
قدindeed غابhas vanished ضياكyour radiance وأغمىand has dimmed كلall بهاكyour splendor
قد غاب ضياك وأغمى كل بهاك
O East, father of guidance, where, I wonder, is your guidance?
O East, father of guidance, where has your guidance gone?
Your radiance has vanished, and all your splendor has dimmed.
Your light has faded and gloom has overcome your splendor.
قدonce كنتyou were لكلfor every ذيone with ظمأthirst بردcoolness رويthirst-quenching
قد كنت لكل ذي ظمأ برد روي
ماwhat بالكyour condition عدتyou have become شاكياًlamenting حرّburning heat ظماكyour thirst
ما بالك عدت شاكياً حرّ ظماك
You were once cooling refreshment for everyone athirst.
You were once a cool drink for the thirsty,
What ails you, that you now lament the burning heat of your thirst?
Why have you now become one complaining of parched lips?
بالأمسyesterday لكلfor every ساقطfallen person كنتyou were يداًa hand
بالأمس لكل ساقط كنت يداً
واليومand today غدوتyou have become ساقطاًfallen تحتbeneath ضناكyour affliction
واليوم غدوت ساقطاً تحت ضناك
Yesterday you were a helping hand to everyone fallen.
Yesterday you were a hand for every fallen one,
And today you have fallen beneath your affliction.
Today you have fallen beneath your own burden.
بالأمسyesterday لكلfor every ذيone with ضنىaffliction كنتyou were قوىstrength
بالأمس لكل ذي ضنى كنت قوى
واليومand today غدوتyou have become فاقداًbereft of كلall قواكyour strength
واليوم غدوت فاقداً كل قواك
Yesterday you were strength for everyone afflicted.
Yesterday you were strength for the oppressed,
And today you are bereft of all your strength.
Today you have lost all your power.
بالأمسyesterday لكلfor every معشرcommunity كنتyou were حمىa refuge
بالأمس لكل معشر كنت حمى
ماnot ضاعwas lost حماكyour refuge بلrather قضاfate خانbetrayed حماكyour refuge
ما ضاع حماك بل قضا خان حماك
Yesterday you were a refuge for every community.
Yesterday you were a refuge for every group,
Your refuge is not lost; rather, fate has betrayed your refuge.
Your protection did not fail, rather your protector betrayed your protection.
ياO شرقEast ولوand even though عليكover you مدّتhas spread ظلمdarkness
يا شرق ولو عليك مدّت ظلم
لاdo not تطغtransgress فسوفfor soon يغمرwill flood النورthe light سماكyour sky
لا تطغ فسوف يغمر النور سماك
O East, though darkness has spread over you,
O East, even if injustice has spread over you,
Do not transgress: light will soon flood your sky.
Do not transgress, for soon light will flood your sky.
الغربthe West إذاif زهاshines فعنthen from ضوئكyour light ذاthat
الغرب إذا زها فعن ضوئك ذا
فالصبرso patience الصبرpatience فغداfor tomorrow رجعwill return ضياكyour radiance
فالصبر الصبر فغدا رجع ضياك
If the West shines, that is from your light.
The West, when it becomes inflated, draws from your light.
So patience, patience! Tomorrow your radiance will return.
So be patient, be patient, for tomorrow your splendor will return.
لاdo not تختشِfear ياO أباfather of السناتيهthe great minds دجىdarkness
لا تختشِ يا أبا السناتيه دجى
فالشمسfor the sun أمامكbefore you اختفتhas vanished وهيwhile it is وراكbehind you
فالشمس أمامك اختفت وهي وراك
Do not fear darkness, O father of great minds.
Do not fear the darkness, O father of years,
For the sun has vanished from before you, yet it is behind you.
The sun has disappeared before you, yet it is behind you.
ياO شرقEast عطشتyou grew thirsty بعدماafter قدalready سقيتyou had given drink
يا شرق عطشت بعدما قد سقيت
منfrom وردكyour watering place كلevery فيئةcommunity فوقupon ثراكyour soil
من وردك كل فيئة فوق ثراك
O East, you grew thirsty after you had given drink
O East, you were thirsty after having quenched
From your watering place to every community upon your soil.
Every flock above your meadows with your roses.
إنif كانwere مياهكyour waters الجواريflowing نضَبتran dry
إن كان مياهك الجواري نضَبت
لاno بدescape لفيضتِهاfor their overflowing فبُشراكَso glad tidings to you بذاكof that
لا بد لفيضتِها فبُشراكَ بذاك
If your flowing waters have run dry,
If your flowing rivers have dried up,
They must overflow—so rejoice at that good news.
Rejoice, for their abundance will surely return to you.
فانهضso rise لحمىto the refuge of عبدAbd (servant of) العزيزal-Aziz (the Mighty) الساميthe exalted
فانهض لحمى عبد العزيز السامي
هذاthis سلطانناour sultan فهذاso this مولاكyour lord
هذا سلطاننا فهذا مولاك
So rise to the refuge of exalted Abd al-Aziz.
So rise up to protect the noble Abdulaziz,
This is our sultan; he, then, is your lord.
For he is our Sultan, he is your master.
