The lover returned to you after a spell of forgetfulness.

And drew near, seeking your favor after his defiance.

A lovesick soul, he saw every wish fulfilled in his return,

And thus, by drawing near, he scaled every height.

And he grew lowly in spirit after its exaltation,

And fell at your feet despite his eminence.

And by God, you would not have gone so far in shunning him, had

his utter immoderation not called forth that response from you.

And when I grew angry, my anger was nothing but

the outbursts of this love as it grew.

It was never empty of you, nor did it turn away from you—

my heart, for all its tenderness turns toward you.

It is the tree of life, through which love for you has flowed

as life itself flows; I have never lived without it.

A lovesick lover does not take to forgetfulness; his habit

is to find you in his evenings and mornings.

You accustomed his mind to ceaseless clamor

through love for you, until all his calm was gone.

So if a chance lull turns him away from you,

and he then returns, you know how far he is from forgetting.

For love draws me toward you by drawing near

to me, while hope keeps me distant through its loftiness.

    فاحتار بين صديقه وعدوّه

    Hope was hostile to my heart, and love befriended it;

so it was bewildered between its friend and its foe.
