How long will secluded ladies draw my affections?

And how long will I love her who rebuffs my hopes?

O oryx eyes, by God, desist! She has not left

a place for you in my heart—the beauty with the mole.

And O human gazelles, flee from him

who loves her whose heart is empty of love for him.

Felled by the turning away of her who shed my blood unavenged,

so never have I received a welcome from you.

A slender beauty, whose stature the boughs approach,

and the lofty moon bows before her exalted face.

And when we met together after a slumber

of separation that had kindled every blaze within the breast,

we lingered, each head bowed in the wonder of reunion,

and the sound of the heart's beating gave voice to the mind.

And between us, longings played in secret,

and the tongues of our demeanor revealed love's state.

Our longing wished for eye to meet eye,

but tears filling our eyes prevented it.

Oh, how strange—a lover who longed for reunion,

yet, once he attained it, gained nothing but turmoil!

But when I sighed in anguish

and tried to loose the torrent of my words,

the love lying still within her depths stirred,

and she cast me a glance that revived my weary self.

And she spoke in a voice made to tremble by love's hand,

and with words like pearls adorning her lovely smiling mouth:

“God bless you, lover who possesses all patience!

If only you had left me a mithqal's weight!

For patience befits only a lover

who inclines toward nothing but what he loves.

Have you spoken of love to another? Then joy be yours,

though I am love-worn: my aim is your joy, O you who spurn me!”

    وحسبك تبريراً شواهد أفعالي

    Then I said, “By God, I have not mentioned another;

and the evidence of my deeds is vindication enough for you.

I am not one to begin estrangement and hatred,

but you are the one who renounces union with me.

You have overrun all my reason and strength,

so I have no speech left to explain my state.

For the tongues of reason have fallen silent before love,

just as lofty discernment has fallen short of grasping it.

I see you, and stillness and bewilderment seize me,

and no wonder, for enchantment is in your precious face.

With every breath, your name is in my mouth,

and your form in my heart, your pledge in my mind.

I spend the nights with my tear ducts streaming,

over the sorrows and terrors I endure,

over my excessive yearnings, over my immense anguish,

over my prolonged longings, over my ill fortune.”

Thus tyrannous love rules its devotees,

and torments them—so let the heart-free man beware.
