تواضع تكن كالنجم لاح لناظر

على صفحات الماء وهو رفيع

على صفحات الماء وهو رفيع

Be humble, and you will be like a star that appears to an onlooker

Be humble like a star that shines

upon the surfaces of the water, though it is high above.

Upon the surface of the water, though exalted.

ولا تك كالدخان يرفع نفسه

ولا تك كالدخان يرفع نفسه

إلى طبقات الجوّ وهو وضيع

إلى طبقات الجوّ وهو وضيع

And do not be like smoke, which raises itself

And be not like smoke that raises itself

to the layers of the atmosphere, though it is lowly.

To the sky's vault, though mean and slighted.
